The streets of northern York Region will be busy with 1,400 canvassers and 130 captains hoping to reach their Heart Month campaign goal of $148,000. Last year, canvassers exceeded their $105,000 goal, reaching a record $130,000 in donations for heart and stroke research. “We're winning the battle against this very diï¬icult dis- ease," John Taylor, president of Heart and Stroke Founda- tion of Ontario York Region north area, said at a camâ€" paign kick-off at Boston Pizza in Stouffville Monday. “We’re not just collecting money, we’re changing peo- ple’s lives." Heart ‘canvassers ‘changing lives’ Mr. Taylor, a regional councillor in Newmarket. has been canvassing for eight years. Every seven minutes, someone dies from a heart attack or stroke in Canada. More than 50.000 strokes and 75,000 heart attacks occur every year and are the cause of one in every three deaths in Canada One dollar from the sale of each heart-shaped pizza at Boston Pizza on Valentine’s Day will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The 16th annual fundrais~ er has raised more than $2.1 million for charity.
