ernest davis r r 4 stouffville christmas day york region a spate of resignations from york regional police is no reflection on the force or its administration this is the opinion expressed by chief bruce crawford at a board of com missioners meeting dec 18 chief crawford implied that a large percentage of officers had resigned to take advantage of better iob odportunities and he could not and should not do anything to stop it we have lost some good police officers theres no question about that but there are some i am delighted to see go five of the most recent resignees were apparently in terviewed and each gave his assurance that there was no animosity towards the force administration or board of com missioners chief crawford intimated that reasons for quiting were often given in confidences and not reported of ficially but if withholding these confidences reflected on- the image of the force he would relay them to the com mission he also said he could supply the board with the number of resignations there had been but that it would be unfair to deal with the matter in that way he added he could not guarantee the same number wouldnt resign again next year two more resignations were accepted at the meeting from officers leaving to become investigators at the same salary but with a car and expense account the chief expressed disappointment that more grade 13 graduates dont apply for admission to the force we have hired some very very good officers we have hired some obviously that dont meet our stan dards and we dont keep them on em ployment whether or not the people were hiring will turn out to be better only god knows and he wont tell me x the report on the five officers in terviewed reveals that sgt fred white resigned to become a justice of the peace in toronto joseph kearns to become a north york fireman william miller to go into the towing business in richmond hill he would con sider re applying to the force if business isnt successful william gunn to join markham water department police shift work caused him eye strain and fatigue and terrence hill to a sales position that he felt he could not turn down seek big brothers driver stabbed markham a toronto man stabbed monday in exchange for giving a hitch hiker a ride according to york regional police joseph alcindo vieira melville avenue picked up a youth in councillor jack anderson fears oshawa voting dominance claremont if the provinces proposal for regional government goes through oshawa will be the centre of power holding 11 of the 30 regional councillors and many mun icipalities may be upset by this central dominance according to pickering township ward one councillor jack anderson councillor anderson did point out that the area in the proposed region is a viable one but he said im disappointed in community number nine and when the region comes in where will we get our ser vices fromthe province was very neglectful when it came out with this proposal he said that plan ning will be one of the biggest jobs of regional government and their will be no local planning board after the region is incorporated in my estimation regional government is taking away from the people the entire area of planning with the present government people can tender their problems to council effectively but with regional government they wont im curious to know what will happen if regional government goes through and the airport doesnt- he said councillor an derson wanted to know what will happen to the airport area north of cedarwood the government has given no indication on that he criticized the province for not an- swering these questions before the proposal was presented however he did agree with the governments revised plan eliminating areas of rama south to brock and west to scott townships from the original oapads plan these northern townships should be kept rural he said councillor anderson doubts the provinces philosophy supporting regionalization the province believes that with regional govern ment there will be more input by the people will be in- peope will be in terested if theyre land is expropriated as has happened to many municipalities that have climbed on the regional govern ment band wagon up comes the question of an identity less ajax is upset because it may go with pickering and lose its identity said councillor anderson he said that after the new year council will hold open meetings with people of pickering and cedarwood to see which way they want to go as far as regional government also at the end of february council will submit a brief to the province on its proposals or changes the area of lawrence and markham road and proceeded to the 7th concession and steeles when the passenger ordered mr vieira to take him home however the victim refused and the suspect demanded mr vieira give him the car the man warned the driver that if he refused he would kill him he then reached into a bag and pulled out a knife after stabbing the victim in the back the man drove off in mr vieira s car the assailant was described as between 20 and 22 years black shoulder length hair a thick moustache and about five feet eight inches in height he was wearing a brown jacket and dark pants mr vieira was not seriously injured york region big brothers of york will operate as a full time agency as of jan 1 1973 and the organization has set a 17000 budget for the new year according to york region president donald j pulcine at a press conference in the black hawk motor inn richmond hill big brothers is a movement formed in 1904 for the purpose of finding companions for fatherless boys bet ween the ages of six and sixteen to meet their proposed budget mr pulcine said we have various fund raising projects in mind our present finances will take us through to six months but as of now well have to raise 10000 to meet our projected budget the york region agency does receive funds from other areas outside its own campaigning last year the region gave us 5000 but its a matter of conjecture as to how much well get this year said mr pulcine but the agency has another serious problem aside from money big brothers are hard to find referring to the fatherless boys mr pulcine said we have no trouble finding little brothers but to get big brothers we have to rely chiefly on the news media and word of mouth there are only two outstanding qualif ications for men who wish to be big brothers one is that they must be 21 years old or over and they must be willing to devote four hours per week to a liiile brother accordi ng to executive director glen walterhouse big brothers are not ex pected to spend a lot of money on a boy and generally it does not cost much the time spent with a little brother is the im portant factor but do not get the wrong idea about the fatherless children who request services of the agency the boys have not necessarily had problems with police schools or parents executive director george karpati said one objective of the agency is to give a little brother male identification because many boys may have just a mother at home mr karpati went on to say that the relationships are very steady between big and little brothers in other words the two are shifted around he pointed out that sometimes race and religion have a part in deciding on which big brother will be joined with a boy it may sound like discrimination but its not he said the most important part of the work is the proper matching mr karpati said that boys who have big brothers seem to give less trouble to police txitirrrrr rrrrtiiitrttxtrttmrrrtril junior b action stouffville new years day has always been a popular date for hockey fans in stouffville in past seasons games played previously from such areas as whitchurch stouff ville markham east gwillimbury king georgina and vaughan in fact these regions have contributed almost nothing to big brothers and all have active big brother and little brother relationships ac cording to don pulcine in a financial report it was stated that most contributions came from the rotary clubs of aurora newmarket and richmond hill the government of the region of york and individual donations glen walterhouse expressed hope to have the markham family life centre serve the markham unionville and stouffville areas jim glover 25 region planned for development east of markham would have greater impact on the town than any other external factor to what extent markhams economy would be affected by the loss of airport zoned land within its present boundaries and the addition of a large area to the northern section of york region had still to be assessed there would also the mayor anticipated be a possible delay in having the towns official plan ready by the end of 1974 because of the proposed boundary changes although mr roman did not specify recreation as a number one priority in 1973 he commented that it would be an achievement and exciting prospect to have planned facilities especially in thornhill in operation in the new year he felt that 73 would see improvements in essential services parks manicured to make
