e tribune thursday november 30 1972 late ben ewen an accomplished horse trainer by madeline harrison loc hill we extend sympathy to mrs joyce ewen and family rr4 stouffville in the sudden passing of ben ewen following a single car accident near gormley nov 23 ben was well known in horse circles particularly in the arabian and hunter and jumper arenas he has trained many young riders some of whom show out standing ability and have garnered many ribbons on the show circuit under bens tutelage ben ewen was an ex rcmp officer and chief instructor of the musical ride when he retired eight years ago he bought bayview farms from the gord hammond estate which was then located on bayview avenue just north of steeles a few years later a disastrous fire took place but ben rose above that and started his stable up bigger and better than ever including a brand new- indoor arena he was eventually forced out by subdivisions and subsequently moved to stouffville where he has made a name for himself as a riding instructor par ticularly interested in the younger generation ben and his purebred arabian gelding hai mirath were top competitors in the show ring winning many trophies and ribbons ben retired from arabian competition when he lost his beloved horse a year ago ben was sent to europe to study with the world famous lippizaner school in vienna where he learned how to ride and train the out standing white lip- pizan horses he was just getting started in his new career in the high dressage phase and we feel sure that his name would have become famous in connection with the lippizans being trained under him some of you may have seen him at markham fair this year when he put on an exhibition ride on mrs monroes lippizan stallion ben was a good friend and we will miss his presence hopefully all that he has achieved will not be forgotten students honored markham district high school com mencement exercises are the highlight of the school year on nov 24 many parents and friends from locust hill attended the annual event among those receiving diplomas and awards from locust hill and community were sandra baker susan brown marie burkholder robert burkholder elizabeth butler morris dalla costa joseph mon- cada mary sabol gail wallace susan pike and laurie wright secondary school honor graduation diplomas were received by helen armstrong larry armstrong david baker blanche sabol and trudy schroeter now mrs david burkholder robert yvonne christie for school board reach uxbridge scott townships and the town of uxbridge telephone 9852254 burkholder and theresa wright each received a three year honors award marie burkholder deserves special mention her achievements include the markham kiwanis club trophy for ob taining highest standing in year 4 highest standing in home economics year 4 and general proficiency in year 4 morris dalla costa received the boys physical and health education award mrs david burkholder nee trudy schroeter received one of the markham district high school staff awards mrs nora reesor is travelling again this time she has gone to visit her sisters in sault ste marie who she hasnt seen for two years or more harold and goldie rutherford celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to hawaii on their way home they detoured via van couver to visit bruce stationed on the west coast while there harold was rushed to hospital with bleeding ulcers pioneer girls visit parkview stouffville pioneer girls from heise hill church presented residents with a program of music and singing nov 23 on nov 26 rev john hamilton of stouffville missionary church conducted the sunday evening ser vice recent visitors to parkview included mr and mrs e pilkington of gait for miss bailey and miss millard helen and edson johnston of queensville for miss jean johnston and mrs nellie dike mr and mrs f cheshire for mr and mrs a hawtin grace cox- worth for mrs m weldrick mrs h n drummond for miss helen walton mrs walter synde for mrs w slack michelle hann for mrs hogge miss lee turner for mrs louie beckett mrs florence miller for miss e william son ruth cleland and rita richmond for mrs m hamilton the austerberry family of ottawa for mr j g davis mrs lome wideman of markham for mrs hilliard and miss gussie hoover gorman and margaret dixon of newmarket for mr a dixon r britton for miss c patton mr and mrs b did the next best thing she made us blind to our own faults tamo barker an siding ben ewen rr4 stouffville was an ac complished equestrian serving for many years as an instructor with the rcmp musical sign the petition he said- there isnt a lot of hunting now the petition was only to prevent outsiders from hunting on private property road conditions are not up to par ac cording to mr hunt more road grading should be considered but i dont think more roads should paved because this will in crease taxes he said according to mr hunt the large number of dog kennels pose a problem people from the city bring their dogs to board at these kennels and the animals howl and upset nearby residents frank hunts chief concern is the people of ward 6 if elected i can assure everyone ill have the time to
