and statement that we must preserve the general stores as typified by that one which serves locust hill three cheers for mr d lets hope this is a campaign promise that will be carried out the general store has been our mainstay through many generations as has been noted in this column previously the building which now houses the general store was first built as a hotel for the railway workers it was then converted into a general store and has served the area through several generations the present owners have been a part of our community for over thirty years mr and mrs wade came to locust hill from rice lake near cobourg where mr wade was born and raised mr wade purchased the store from perc wilson mr wilson moved from the grocery business into the lumber trade and had a coal and lumber yard just east of the railway tracks the general store at locust hill has been our community centre through wars depressions rationing and now the days of affluence its services to the community have been and continue to be all encompassing in the days of the horse and buggy era it was a hardware store harness shop drug store china shop and gossip centre except for a few changes in the general merchandise it still is mr and mrs wade dispense the mail to all parts of this com munity extending as far as greenwood to the east and west to markhams tenth concession charles wade drives the truck succeeding ken hastings it is a big territory to cover but charles does it ef ficiently those of us who reside in the hamlet of locust hill proper maintain post boxes in the store and mail time is old home week once a day friends and relatives gather to exchange the latest news no matter what time of day one has to shop even if it be at supper time and an in terruption of a meal occurs there is always a kindly word and smile for anyone who drops in on hot summer days it is the one place in town where there is always a cold pop in the refrigerator and an ice cream cone in the freezer on cold winter days the temperature is always warm and the gossip lively sooner or later everyone in locust hill and for miles around has recourse to the general store and its goodies the shelves are crammed with all manner of wares from teapots to milking machine parts shredded wheat to those long winter woolies cigarettes to candies and from bread to bolts there is none of the sterile impersonality of the big chain self serve store in the general store there is personal caring sharing and helping there is no rush or hurry none of the heres your groceries give me your monev and get out the local store is part of our heritage it is a holdover from the trading posts of long gone years it is as much a part of our community now as it was then and we still need it as much mr
