sidewalk in stouffville have been described as deplorable by councillor gordon ratcliff the town will over spend its budget by 900 to make the necessary repairs residents particularly the elderly will readily endorse this decision many areas of sidewalk are indeed deplorable a hazard knowing this it seems strange that council would set aside only 3000 in its 1972 estimates for this purpose the trouble is too little has been spent on sidewalk maintenance for years thus leading up to a major expense and on the same subject im provements whatever happened to the priority rating on lighting for main street the south side is like bf oadway but the north is a cemetery industrial park yes or no participatory democracy is a fine and noble thing but if it produces only discussion and no action it accomplishes nothing this has been the result of whitchurch stouffvilles long proposed power boat bylaw at musselmans lake just talk and council appears to be headed in exactly the same direction with regard to a proposed industrial park- nowhere one considered site is near the in tersection of don mills and the aurora road as one might expect several are opposed there will be opposition regardless of what area is considered but council must take the lead must know where theyre going up to now the tails been wagging the dog in our opinion its the height of poor planning to establish an industrial complex at a site so far distant from municipal services for even though sewer and water provisions are not required at present a build up of this kind is not just for today it will set the pattern for tomorrow the location is suspect too in the sense that two industries have already ap proached planning committee in the hope that the property can be re zoned members should weigh these ap plications carefully as much as whit church stouffville is anxious to acquire industrial assessment these firms should be directed not do the directing the right direction in our opinion is in close proximity to services in close proximity to stouffville the sooner the town makes up its mind in this matter the better for all concerned fun with figures editor immii ontario riding m p norm cafik is to be- commended for his personal in volvement in a questionnaire related to the proposed airport in pickering township the scope of the study is extensive and this aspect of it must be kept in mind when considering the total result mr cafik as ontario ridings representative in ottawa had to consider the riding as a whole hence the figure 515 percent in favor of the airport 438 percent opposed 533 percent in favor of cedarwood 401 percent opposed however in the pickering uxbridge areas more directly affected by the proposed project the percentages swing the other way 51 to 44 percent opposed to the airport 47 to 45 percent opposed to cedarwood the reader can be confused still further when he reads that in the pickering noise zone 527 percent feel more will benefit while 446 percent feel more will be hurt likewise in the uxbridge twp noise zone 485 percent feel more will benefit while 435 percent feel more will be hurt if one is prejudiced one way or another he can read into the figures the result that satisfies him most perhaps then the computer has its place it makes a determined effort to keep everybody happy dear sir a recent story in several papers told about a nine year old markham area girl who was accidently shot in the back while watching a ball game in the dicksons hill public school playground two youths were arrested and charged with dangerous use of firearms it is unfortunate that this girl was needlessly injured by the hands of un trained and unsupervised boys who if convicted will carry a police record for the rest of their lives as a member of the whitchurch con servation club i would like it to be known that a course of instruction will be held by our club under the hunter safety training program of the department of lloyd public concluded aug 15 for further in formation call 7275996 8881214 or 640- 3738 it is the hope of our club that accidents such as this will not be repeated and that youths may enjoy the outofdoors in safety and with the knowledge and good practise of firearms which will allow others to enjoy it safely the use of firearms can be a safe and enjoyable sport whether used in hunting or target shooting let us encourage the inexperienced to spend the time to learn the proper and safe methods which if applied will eliminate these needless accidents bill richardson rri gormley ont member of the whitchurch conservation club dear editor i observed in the tribune july 13 that sam chapman director of education york county and one other of the ivory tower set had been accorded a 1500 salary increase the report however did not state the total figure each will now receive like maybe 35000 for mr chapman just how much can one man be worth perhaps when it comes to education there is no monetary limit signed busted dear jim thank you very much for your interest in davids recovery i am pleased to report that he is so much improved he expects to be home this weekend and start back to work on a part time basis next week we are all deeply grateful for his miraculous recovery and for the kind expressions of concern from so many friends don deacon 40lmint im a coach amost by jim thomas im a softball coach well not exactly a coach more like a manager well not exactly a manager either more like a base adjuster a bat collector and a helmet pick er upper but regardless of how menial the chore the involvement has given me the greatest satisfaction of any extra curricular activity in years the team you see is comprised solely of boys seven to ten truly the greatest group of guys a coach i mean a manager could ever want to work with the same goes for all the kids in the entire league a few adults would do well to follow their example a few coaches and managers too like many of the lads this is my first season long experience with this sort of thing and boy have i pulled some boners like the night when my own son barry came to bat against a club from ballantrae i clean forgot all about a player already parked on first forgot that is until a kindly sideline spectator drew attention to the fact that the little lad was still standing there patiently awaiting my command to go by then it was too late barry was on second there were three out and the inning was over my face glowed as red as our duffle bag on another occasion during an outfield warm up i mildly criticized one boy for his slow looping throws get em in here hard i said this isnt a girls game he did nearly broke my hand however this is the one thing i like most about these lads they do what theyre told no arguments no questions asked the questions comelater all from my son like why did you tell danny to run he asked he was out a mile gulp why did i howcome you told me to try for a single after the coach had asked me to bunt yeah howcome no reply thats the one thing i have against the current league setup too many com binations of fathers and sons a dad expects too much of his boy and a son expects his know nothing father to know it all sooner or later theres bound to be a personality clash with both trying to defend the obvious ineptness of their abilities there are other problems too like getting to the games on time try working up to six oclock racing home a quick change of clothes a sand wich and be on the diamond at 630 l no easy chore but it can be done even as far distant as pine orchard and vandorf but the sacrifice has its reward like the comment from the wee tyke thursday we lost but gee what fun sir with the mariposa folk festival a rousing success all tickets sold out i can see no reason why the town of whitchurch stouffville could not host a similar program within the immediate area there are many talented musicians and oldtimers too who could come out and entertain with their guitars and fiddles it would not be necessary to entice the big names to attend so the cost would be negligible at mariposa for example the performers receive only 50 plus travelling expenses there could be displays of crafts concessions for sales of homebaked food the possibilities are endless so why not a folk festival in the stouffville park the month of august in my opinion would be ideal john saffer stouffville rr3 congratulations congratulations to mrs caroline pierce of markham on the occasion of her 100th birthday friday july 21 mrs pierce resides at the home of mrs percy jones 288 main street
