significance cannot remain on their present sites the federal and provincial governments will consider moving them to suitable properties even if they must be placed outside the immediate area mr mckeough said the provincial treasurer also an nounced that an oral history of the area is being gathered this summer on tape recorders by two university students this project under the auspices of township has been the subject of extended negotiation between the municipality and the metropolitan toronto and region con servation authority at a june meeting of the standing com mittee members voted to accept the authoritys offer and close down township operations at the pit by december 31 of this year the recom mendation from committee was presented to council june 2g where it was rejected the vote saw deputy reeve george ashe councillors quick and kitchen supporting the sale while councillors mcpherson anderson matheson and reeve williams opposed it no clear direction as to further action was given stiphouts tv sales service specializing in vandorf a meeting here july 6 saw charles warden of the aurora side road emerge as the chief opponent of two new industries in that area the public meeting was called by town council to allow the public to state their views on a proposed official plan amend ment the amendment would rezone a parcel of land in the southeast corner of don mills and the aurora road from rural to in dustrial two firms helmac roth ltd and moldmasters ltd have expressed in terest in locating new plants there although the 14 members of the public who attended the meeting were almost outnumbered by councillors and of ficials of both the municipality and york region the citizens made their presence felt chairman tom lonergan opened the meeting and asked planner gordon brush to explain the amendment citing pressures for development and an unfavorable assessment ratio mr brush stated that his department is in general agreement with the change only dry industries which use little water and create little sewage would be permitted among those present bob rogers rrl gormley ex pressed the concern of many at the possibility of ending up with in dustrial sites scattered throughout the township i just wonder where it will break out next he stated mr brush replied that this is in some respects a highly desirable location the major factor he said is ease of access to the proposed highway 404 charles warden made a lengthy presentation and tabled a copy of his tme uotrmxt uooc ccao n- philips color tv and stereo immediate senrice to all care of your eyes and theyll see you safely through the working day the sure way to safety is selfdefence rse- objections a mistake was made when this parcel was severed by the committee of ad justment he stated the responsibility is on council not to compound that mistake his objections were based on several factors possible damage to water supply proximity of the site to a densely populated residential area the smallness of the site 84 acres and difficulty of direct access to the property how can the municipality allow two industries to build on 84 acres when an individual has to buy a larger parcel to build one home he demanded mr warden also cited present traffic congestion at the in tersection and predicted two in dustries would worsen the situation he ex pressed fear for the safety of children boarding school buses i have no objection to industry he stated but it should be put where it will be a benefit to the municipality not a hindrance mr warden in dicated that he would carry his objections to the ontario municipal board mr brush assured him that this proposal is still in the initial stage and thorough studies will be made by various depart ments to ensure that problems will not be caused by the two companies chairman lonergan thanked mr warden for his com ments im glad to see people taking an in terest in their own municipality he said ruth warden was another outspoken critic of the project at one point she accused the companies of buying up cheap rural land and asking for rezoning instead of paying for industrial land councillor betty vannostrand pointed out that at the time the property was purchased whit church township had no zoning bylaw chairman lonergan agreed and said this meant there was no bar to building fac tories there present at the meeting was iiwrence hennessy former whitchurch deputy reeve he raised the possibility of an industrial park on or around the parcel in addition he said there was some measure of ex pediency involved with the committee of adjustment decision in 1969 and suggested the file be checked to establish any con ditions imposed by the committee chairman lonergan agreed this would be done debate in the vandorf hall occupied more than two hours and the amendment was thoroughly examined mr and mrs hans heyd owners of the local shell station ex pressed approval mr warden maintained the approving the proposal would mean his property would be surrounded by in dustrial areas as there is one such parcel along the cnr tracks already this he said would destroy the value of his land if that were an industrial area along the aurora road would you have any objection to having vour property zoned industrial mr hennessy asked him would you go on record as agreeing to this to assist council in making their decision 1 would be com pletely in agreement with an industrial zoning for my land stated mr warden this he said would make him part of an industrual area as long as it remains residential my land would be worthless mayor ken laush- way observed that he himself could see no objection to zoning the whole area industrial if all criteria can be met at a planning committee meeting the following day the amendment was again discussed jim hill an assistant to mr brush revealed that site plans have not yet been received from helmac roth this he said is delaying the study it was agreed that no action would be taken on the amendment have a night out with the graeme harris duo july 10 to july 29 plus 2 hr matinee saturday sherwood park plaza steak house tavern sherwood plaza hwy 7
