deputy clerk quits before hes hired stouffville council has gone on record as opposing the construction of an international airport in pickering town ship this reversal of an earlier stand occurred at a meeting june 13 a motion was put forward by councillor m e r 1 y n baker seconded by councillor june button resolving that council does not agree with the airport location reasons cited for this disagreement included 1 the lack of official figures on emissions and noise from aircraft 2 the failure of higher levels of government to offer compensation to those persons in whitchurch stouffville likely to be affected by the air port and finally 4 council has an obligation to safeguard the future for its citizens there was little discussion from members most merely stating that the resolution reflected their feelings coun cillor herb simpson though moved that the resolution be tabled until the next council meeting mr simpson pointed out that council will be meeting with officials concerned with the project on june 26 and urged that con sideration be delayed until june 27 on the vote only councillor simpson and mayor laushway asked that the resolution be tabled this is a very important resolution observed the mayor adding that councillor betty vannostrand was not present some things in it i agree with whole heartedly he con tinued but i wouldnt base my argument on the fact that they tgovernment officials have failed to supply information mayor laushway repeated his earlier stand that the project cannot be changed the powers that be have chosen pickering he said the mayor admitted that a certain amount of noise would be inevitable but it might be minimized 1 believe my duty is to make sure we do all we can to swing the runways far enough from stouffville he stated i dont want stouffville or any part of stouffville under the flight paths after the mayor had spoken at some length to explain his op position to the resolution he called the vote councillors baker button rat- cliff and lonergan were in favor with councillor simpson and the mayor op posed the resolution carried and copies will be forwarded to local members and to the respective departments the decision councillor roy muldrew some doubt was cast upon mayor romans statement about the possibility of obtaining a new clerk when council pointedly ignored a committee recommendation that mr harold edwards be appointed deputy- clerk the tribune has learned that mr edwards formerly clerktreasurer of thorold township and deputyclerk of the town of thorold with drew his application for the markham position following an interview june 3 it has not yet been possible to discover mr edwards reason for this action another resolution to advertise for a town clerk was deferred for later discussion mr crisps
