advance tickets can be pur- chased from toromark furniture and f cook real estate york region it was the s52000 question at a meeting of regional council may 18 a report of the finance committee recommended that the region pay its share of costs for the water front redevelopment project on lake on tario york was assessed a total of 25991410 by the metropolitan toronto and region con servation authority to be paid in 5 annual installments the question had been discussed several times and members of council were not too impressed with the demand at a recent meeting however it was revealed that the period for appeal has lapsed therefore the first payment of almost 52000 was included in the 1972 estimates while munici palities have no control over this kind of budgetary action by a conservation authority they have the right to appeal such assessments to the ontario municipal board aurora mayor dick lllingworth led the fight against the committees recom mendation he has consistently opposed regional participation in this project its too late now to appeal the assessment for this year he observed but the next council is free to do so a committee of council should meet with the authority and the minister on this whole project mayor lllingworth moved deletion of that clause from the committees report chairman garfield wright suggested that removing references to the fiveyear aspect might be enough but mayor lllingworth disagreed we would still be committing ourselves to a total figure of 259000 he said were stuck for 52000 this year lets not make it any worse solicitor edward oakes asked for his opinion said it would still be possible to appeal if the omb turned it down he said the matter could go to the lieutenant- governor in council markham mayor tony roman saw- nothing wrong with mr illingworths suggestion but wanted council to decide what grounds would be cited for an appeal or a submission to the minister after considerable discussion councillor jim jonegeneel urged members io make their feelings known i would like to see council go on record as being opposed to participating in this project he said and added the solicitor should place our ap peal on record as well by a vote of 9 to 7 members agreed to instruct mr oakes to lodge an appeal and authorized the chairman to appoint a committee to discuss the matter at the provincial level fl i
