noying problem for toronto city residents much of the refuse has been piled in metro parks and while hardly a com patible use for such properties still better than letting it collect on city streets last week we suspect a portion of the overflow found its way into whitchurch stouffville a little used gravel pit on the bloomington road proved an ac commodating site but not for long local authorities working in close co operation with member bill hodgson yorknorth cut through departmental red tape at queens park to reach the minister of environment hon james auld and stress the seriousness of the situation within hours a stop order had been issued and the dumping ceased in this regard the tribune commends mayor ken laushway bylaw en forcement officer marshall miller and mr hodgson for giving this matter the attention it deserved appreciation is also due the com munityminded citizen who first observed this condition and acted promptly to halt its continuance saturday the urgency for such a site has been pointed up by the fact that a piece of property near the intersection of don mills and the aurora sideroad has been selected as a location for a large factory with head offices now in willowdale the town planning committee on receipt of the application were naturally impressed we are too with the thought of added industrial assessment but not necessarily with the site for we envision factories some small some large popping up everywhere to a degree we have this problem already established industries far removed from municipal services the town should plan now for an in dustrial park an area to accommodate plants of all types and sizes in one established location other municipalities have made such moves and found the policy beneficial to all concerned it would prove beneficial in whitchurch stouffville too ban public service strikes if the trend continues it may be difficult for the trudeau government to wait until after the next federal election to bring forward legislation which will put a damper on the continuing strikes in public services as this column has pointed out before there is only one loser in such strikes and that is john public he is grievously inconvenienced during such occasions and still gets it in the neck when the strike is finally settled as he is called on to pay whatever increases have been gained in a weak moment the govern ment allowed this legislation to get on the books and has lived to regret it this could surely have been foreseen we are presently faced with municipal strikes in several large centres another public utility hydro is preparing to with draw services there have been rum blings in post office circles and the national tv and radio service is still bogged down in a prolonged dispute the people who elect the members of parliament deserve better service than this and it is up to these elected representatives to see that they get it shutting down a screw driver factory because of an argument between em ployees and owner is one thing but curtailing public services is entirely another matter dear sir i am convinced that the government of canada or the minister of transport and the government of ontario or darcy mckeough have taken hasty ill con sidered and unnecessary action in the expropriation and planning of a second international airport in pickering twp after reading the technical report on the site evaluation dated september 1970 and prepared for the minister of tran sport of canada no reasonable person could come to any other conclusion in that report the pickering site was ruled out because of three of the main criteria used by the experts in that 1 the site was partly within the area having a population considered too dense for an airport 2 it was completely within one of the areas stated to be unsuitable because of the geography 3 it was completely within an area ruled out because it was in the flight path of malton airport the report also stated that the provincial government which was fully consulted in making the report did not wish to have an airport sited in a zone 2 area agriculture and recreation in which zone the pickering site is located the experts preparing the report commended strongly that all residential development within the 100 cnr noise rating be expropriated my reading of the report makes it clear that most if not all of stouffville will be within that noise rating please note that the federal government saw fit to expropriate 80000 acres including all noise lands for the ste scholastique site and please note that the report says that a freezing of noise lands is totally unsatisfactory and that it is much less expensive in the long run to expropriate noise lands needless to say the hasty and ill ad vised choice of pickering as a site has been made and the only way the government could follow the recom mendations of its experts would be to expropriate all of stouffville and a large part of markham the report also specifically states that the least costly manner of implementing a second airport is to open it about 1985 up until which time malton will be fully capable of handling all toronto air traffic mr jamieson had the gall to intimate on a cfrb radio program on april 23 that the pickering site had been con sidered in this 1970 site evaluation technical report the only consideration given to this site in this report was to totally rule it out the report also strongly indicates that this is not only a search for a second international airport but is a search for a new international airport in that malton will be slowly phased out to at least handle only local air traffic if this is the case a more flagrant mistake than picking this site in view of all the technical information contained in this and other reports could not be made stop it gordon c ness stouffville sir a group of dogooders in scarboro are endeavoring to have removed from the face of the earth that renowned pioneer landmark the outdoor privy you can bet none of them ever had the privilege of utilizing this kind of service since it seems everyone is attempting to outdo the other why not set up some sort of society to stop this move wm mcarthur rri gormley a means test for working mothers an unrealistic solution to complex employment problem dear mr thomas i cannot let your column of april 20 in regard to a means test for all working mothers go unanswered what you propose is not only a travesty of the universal declaration of human rights but offers a completely unrealistic means of solving the very complex problem of unemployment in todays rapidly changing technological society we need a far more realistic and humane method of solving our problems than the one you put forth your suggestion that we discriminate against the freedom of choice of one segment of our population who happen to be wives and mothers as well as human beings strikes me as being a most punitive measure i dont know where you get your in formation the reasons mothers have for going outside the home to work but i have worked with women in programs at seneca college for a number of years and i can assure you that a woman who considers making any commitment outside the environs of home and family whether it be in the field of paid work continuing education or volunteer work in the community is very cognizant of the problems she will encounter in trying to balance a double life some of the most always tired housewives i have encountered are those who confine all their interests and ac tivities to the confines of their own homes there are also many working mothers who are doing worthwhile jobs they find productive and satisfying and their children are not running wild as you put it they are women who are in terested in many areas of involvement and as a result are themselves more interesting they contribute greatly to the well being of their families and to the productivity of their community and this country in the reality of todays society we must all work together to achieve the freedom of choice so desirable for all people let us not fall into a trap of trying to impose our own value judgements on others and viewing the solution to problems in a simplistic fashion to you jim thomas no twenty lashes with a plastic rolling pin but an in vitation to contact me at 2945762 and come out and meet with the participants of senecas worlds of women program in markham they are a most vibrant group and i think you would find their views both interesting and enlightening irma melville mrs program coordinator rr2 markham dear sir as a resident of the town of markham i am writing this letter to you to protest the proposed new airport to be situated just on our eastern border i protest for the following reasons i i do not believe it has been adequately proven that the airport is indeed necessary 2 the havoc that this airport will cause in an environmental sense is enough reason alone to dispense with the whole idea 3 compensation my home is situated two miles from the proposed airport boundary and right in the middle of the noise zone to date no mention has been made of compensation to people like me and yet how can i possibly dispose of my property without taking a severe loss 4 overall plan in proposing this airport the federal and provincial governments would seem to wish us to believe that they are thinking ahead 20 or 30 years if that is so then let us hear the rest of their plan for our lives 20 or 30 years from now before we decide on this airport 5 whiie elephant many of the worlds most distinguished and respected thinkers are predicting that long before the turn of the century only 28 years away we will be forced into a nogrowth economy on a worldwide scale and particularly in north america this thought alone i would think should give our political leaders pause before committing themselves on a project of this nature 6 democracy or dictatorship as someone recently stated in the globe and mail before a single foot of land is expropriated the question of locating an airport there should be put to a referendum democratic government demands that the people to be most af fected within a 20 mile radius of the proposed superport be given the right to vote to refuse this is to acknowledge the right of government to bulldoze its way anywhere it chooses and the public be damned j b foote rr2 markham dear sir while you as a responsible journalist are aware of the fact that most people on welfare are anxious to work it is not surprising that 68 percent of those replying to m p john roberts questionnaire are misinformed statistics show that 987 percent of all welfare recipients are unemployed through no fault of their own but statistics are a bore even if you listed all the available facts concerning welfare it is unlikely that people would bother to read them the ontario antipoverty organization has the facts available in printed form for those who care to take the time to look them over public speakers are also available without charge to groups anxious to listen and learn a semi monthly newsletter is also provided the fact that 95 percent of the people surveyed did not answer the roberts questionnaire at all is commendable they were honest enough not to give an ignorant reply bruce arnold toronto the search goes on by jim thomas on saturday morning march 4 mrs j isobel brooks answered a telephone call at her residence hwy 7 and cone 10 markham packed a few personal belongings into a bag and walked out the back door that was two months ago she hasnt been seen or heard from since so the search goes on two york regional detectives working fulltime on the case its been close to 20 years since i last visited the property aubrey and isobel brooks operated a store there then no supermarket mind you but a mighty handy stopoff point for items from rubber boots to bubble gum it was also a convenient meeting place for the then- famous peachs softball club wed gather there to map out a little pregame strategy before heading east to claremont or brougham those were enjoyable times all fun few responsibilities how different sunday my knock was answered by loud barking from within i wasnt quite sure if the response would take the form of an unapologetic punch in the nose or the pain of several canine teeth clamped into my ankle fortunately for me it was neither rather a small greyhaired gen tleman that i immediately recognized as aubrey himself welcomed me in he introduced me to duffy a pug- nosed pekingnese hes all i have with me now he said if it wasnt for him i id go crazy it seemed inconsiderate to give the j impression i had dropped in voluntarily i for a sunday afternoon chat so i im- j mediately told him my reason for being j there in all probability he had guessed but his expression suddenly grew serious when i pulled out my pad and pen dont write any of this down he warned or i wont tell you a thing there have been too many wrong accounts printed already i apologized saying i only wished the facts aubrey however had very little to tell j he recalled being down in the i basement when the phone rang isobel j answered then left the time was 11 am i aubrey remembered telling his wife to i have a good time and to hurry back that was eight weeks and six days ago its not the first time that isobel brooks has left home but on the other occasion that she travelled to vancouver her husband knew where she was this time he was told nothing and has heard nothing i cant believe shes dead he said i keep thinking shell walk through the door any minute and shed sure be welcome so aubrey brooks keeps waiting and hoping two police detectives keep searching and wondering the mysterious disappearance of mrs isobel brooks remains a mystery ode to a jet cows may stop milking hens may stop laying wild birds may fly and escape but why should i fear for soon i shall hear the roar of a big dc 8 some folk may be crying their crops are all dying the air is so thick they cant see but why should i fret im going to get the view of a jet over me who cares about noise who bothers with smog who worries our tax dollars gone our government told us our faith should just hold us while they do our country more wrong well if airports their choice to ignore my small voice to impose a white elephant on me my fate is quite clear you wont find me here my canada will no longer be tasha baggs rr4 stouffville
