thursday march 30 1972 the tribune page 15 think about it by a b bud bonner jj sometimes a house has to fall on me before i can understand omething but today it didnt take a falling house just a little kid- type hockey player to make me realize something was wrong it didnt happen in markham but it happened and it happened to me i was parked on a street a short distance from a community arena and while there i svatched a small boy just about big enough carry his riggin walk down the street to the rink hockey helmet in place hockey sweater over his shirt hockey gloves covering otherwise bare hands holding a battered hockey stick around his neck he had his skates hung by the itlaces this guy was agoing to play shinny on sthe last day of his seaster school break b i was somewhat amused by the sight because it brought back memories unfortunately the amusement was shortlived for it wasnt i long until the same little guy came back up the street slowly head down i watched him until he came to where i was parked pand curiosity got the best of me walking over to him i realized he didnt want me to see his face when i ijspoke he turned toward me almost finable to see for the tears that filled his eyes and ran down his cheeks our con versation in part went like this whats the trouble pal nuthin are you not going to play hockey it costs a quarter to get in pioneer day at markham museum saturday was pioneer day at the markham museumwith many activities of interest to both young and old here 9 year old kelly petch tries her hand at operating a spinning wheel kelly is the daughter of mr and mrs lyle petch talisman crescent markham jas thomas havent got a quarter huh nope and they wont let you in without nope do you want to play hockey uh huh not much of a conversation but enough to make me realize that one week from today the same ice he wanted to skate on would be deserted to me this was an instance of almost complete stupidity that exists everywhere there is a rink because the same thing hap pens at them all ice will stand empty until someone comes along with a quarter or a dollar or twenty dollars to pay their way in to skate think about it for a minute where can a little kid go to play shinny without having to pay registration fees or admission without having to have a coach and manager without having to join a team without having to produce a birth cer tificate and without having to listen to adults telling him to get that guy or hit him but win at any cost where can a little kid go just to play we can answer that question but before we do we have to start thinking humanitarily instead of monetarily rinks can pay their way and still have room for a little shinny but it takes thought and cooperation and its darned near time we started think about it by the way that little kidtype hockey player got to play at least today seefred construction ltd j builder of fine homes specializing in additions store fronts recreation rooms farm buildings be taking place with government before any final decision is made on the position of the runways at the new international airport in pickering town ship he said that even a 5 degree change could make a great difference to stouff- ville the mayor also told the audience that the land freeze was not completely unyielding and forms were available at the municipal office on which residents who might have had some project or building in progress could ap peal the mayor in troduced mr j l larry forester who is project director for the new airport as it pertains to services and the cedarwood development also mr al denov from the town regional planning department mr denov gave the lions a brief look at some of the project maps while mr foresters remarks were confined chiefly to answering questions mr forester ad mitted that the maps gave a bad impression of the position of stouffville and the distance between the town boundaries and the approach or takeoff areas were not nearly as close as they appeared on the maps he said the most noise occurs immediately off the ends of the runways which are all contained within the present boundaries of pickering township on the new and more precise maps of sound intensity stouffville appears to be com pletely outside even the sound fringe in answer to a question on ecology he said that the con servation areas would be protected from any claremont is to be cut off from us he said what is going to happen to land values here where the government is not the eager buver asked dr smith in reply mr forester said the situation was not as bleak as mr smith indicated he reiterated his remarks concerning the distance away of the planes and said it was too soon to determine the road pattern pertaining to claremont in mr foresters opinion land values would go up rather than down this has been the pattern he said lion bob hammond asked why the airport couldnt be pushed about six miles east and north mr hammond didnt get an answer to his comment but did receive the largest ovation lion vern davies suggested the government was greedy in buying up so much land mr forester explained the problem of continuing with malton saying that
