program is being developed by the department of health the ontario hospital services commission and the department of social and family services and will extend hospital in surance benefits to residents of charitable and municipal homes for the aged privately operated nursing homes and homes for special care eligibility for the new extended care insured service will be determined by the province on an in dividual basis using the following criterea a a persons good standing in the provinces health in surance program b residence in the province for a period of one year prior to date of admission to an extended care facility c a persons need for continuing medical and skilled nursing supervision a persons need for such supervision as well as eligibility for the new benefits will be determined on the basis of information supplied on individual computerized forms by attending physicians and ad ministration of the extended care facilities only approved extended care facilities willbe able to receive benefits for eligible residents approval of the facility will be dependent on maintenance of minimum standards set up by the depart ments involved and after inspection and evaluation of the facility by govern- m e n t teams domiciliary or normal care areas of homes for the aged are not expected to be covered the new extended coverage should ease the financial burden for the many persons mostly elderly in ontario who require long term nursing care and supervision as well as upgrading and making more uniform standards of nursing care across the province it marks a
