wishes and ambitions for everyone for the residents of two neighboring communities uxbridge and markham 1972 is very special indeed it marks their 100th birthday as incorporated municipalities a milestone of progress to be looked on with pride for both areas markham in par ticular an event of this kind couldnt have come at a more opportune time for it affords people an opportunity to forget for the moment at least the problems looming on the horizon and concentrate on things present and memories past the occasion will tend to bring people together in a more personal relationship and halt for one brief period the separations that consistently occur with what some developers still refer to as progress in this regard uxbridge is to be envied theirs is the community untouched by the menacing tentacles of metro theirs is the town where folks still stand on the sidewalk and chinwag with their neighbors theirs is the municipality where joe and john could live on the next corner or the next concession the first name greeting is still in style markham however is changed tremendously changed and no amount of wishing can change it back but temporarily at least the months ahead will allow residents a time to reflect a time to recall the days that used to be a time to remember this privilege not even progress can remove so to uxbridge to markham congratulations from a neighbor next door just turned 95 ffle tribune page 3 something smells kunio hidaka the town of markhams highly qualified planning director has resigned his decision to quit the 19000 a year post came as no real surprise but markhams handling of this affair does surprise in particular the unacceptable explanations provided by board chairman jim jongeneel it was councillor bud bonners double denial of departmental wrongdoing that started the rumor mill turning while not in attendance to hear the bonner statement firsthand mayor tony roman was quickly acquainted with the details ke immediately con tacted the local press and asked that the story be scratched the tribune refused to give him this assurance and the following night he reintroduced the issue in council referring to the alleged rumors as vicious nothing more was said at least not in public but its now obvious much was later said in private hence mr hidakas resignation the press as one can gather is as much in the dark over this whole affair as the people however we can attest to the planning knowledge of mr hidaka and the mar vellous cooperation this newspaper has always received in its close contact with him in these days when orderly planning and development is so vital to the future of a growing municipality like markham someone with professional experience is needed not at newmarket but at but- tonville in these days when department em ployeepress relations are next to nil a man of mr hidakas stature should not be ushered out the back door without a reason a good reason lets hear it mr mayor be a big brother the big brothers of york are presently conducting a membership drive this organization has done a great deal of good and they can do much more if public response permits presently the big brothers are in a double bind more money is needed and more volunteers are necessary in this region alone there is a waiting list of 30 boys this organization unlike some works on a strictly personal and individual basis the boys are products of broken homes or singleparent families they need a parttime father giving up four hours of your week for such a lad is not really much of a sacrifice the job provides its own reward in the satisfaction to be derived from watching a boy mature any parent is familiar with the process for those who want to help but genuinely cannot spare this amount of time there is another avenue open memberships cost anywhere from 2 per year to 100 for an associate mem bership jan 2 to 9 is big brother week give it some thought s mail to the editor i am writing in response to the editorial about the juvenile hockey team in the jan 23 edition of the tribune my husband and i feel qualified to speak out having attended all but one of the juvenile games this year whoever was the source of your information i feel sure they must have told you more than it was just a disgraceful evening we go along with that but there is much more the disgrace must be placed squarely on the shoulders of the sun derland fans there were penalties called against both sides and a pushing match developed in he penalty box it was nothing serious but a sunderland fan jumped in and pinned our players arms while his player pounded the stouffvilie boy more sunderland fans got into the act the game was stopped and the stouffvilie and sunderland coaches hurried across to help the referees break it up at this point about 25 sunderland spectators as well as the rest of their players poured onto the ice to do battle with the 5 stouffvilie players left on the ice needless to say the rest of our boys ignored their coachs orders to stay on i the bench and went to help the stouffvilie coach took his team to the dressing room until the opp arrived the referees insisted that the final 12 minutes be played in my opinion a piece of stupidity in itself i spoke to one of the policemen after the game and voiced my dismay he laughed and said it was nothing that they were called there regularly every week we like a lot of other parents are concerned about the violence in the hockey games it is not limited to juveniles there is fighting in every league i cant understand why the juveniles were singled out for an editorial attack if youre going to go after someone go after the fans many of them parents who should know better they sit in the stands hurling obscenities and screaming for blood i wonder too at the section of the editorial that exempts the 1970 champion juveniles from any criticism for this type of thing i attended their games know them well and like them but at no time did i sec them skating around with halos perhaps the writer of this editorial has forgotten some of the donnybrooks that they were in or is this permissible as long as youre a winner shave and a haircut two bits due to a plant fire some years ago the tribune files are incomplete later than 1920 the editor is therefore appreciative of a copy sent in by miss elsie hoover rupert that was 69 years ago parable of the corn from chittys law journal there was a man who was in the business of raising chickens however he raised no corn to feed the birds and the hens refused to lay eggs unless they were fed nearby there was a farmer who grew large quantities of corn so the chicken- farmer went to him and offered to work one day each week for a wage of 500 the agreement was made the chicken- farmer went fo work each week earned five dollars and gave the money back to the farmer in return for five bushels of corn for a time everyone was happy the hens got their corn their owner earned five dollars a week and the farmer had the labor of the chickenfarmer one day each week then one day the chickenfarmer went to the farmer and said the price of everything is going up so much that i cannot work for less than 750 per day the farmer agreed that that seemed fair enough but added i agree that prices are going up and that you should get 750 per day but prices have gone up for me too and i cant sell you a bushel of corn for less than 150 the chickenfarmer agreed that that was fair so he worked for 750 per day and paid 750 for five bushels of corn finally he got 1000 per day and paid 200 a bushel for corn and the farmer was happy and said to his wife things are good i get two dollars a bushel for my corn and the chicken farmer said to his wife things are good i get ten dollars a day for my labor and the statistician said isnt this wonderful national incomes are at new high levels and the politicians bragged about it and said it was our party that did this for you everybody felt so good about it that they voted for the politicians prepare for municipal status in 1877 ninetyfive years ago this month stouffvilie was preparing for municipal status by passage of a bylaw which established the official village in january 1877 first recognition of the settlement was in 1851 when records show the population to be 350 inhabitants the next figures available were in 1881 when the population had risen to 866 the village derived its name from abraham stouffer and in early writings the name often appeared as stover or stofer and the hamlet was known as stoversville or stauffville for political purposes the portion lying within whitchurch was in the north york riding and the portion in markham in east york the first reeve was james dougherty with j g reesor william leaney gl freel and j gibney as councillors i also take exception to the statement too old for midgets not good enough for junior so what does that make them untouchables the boys in that age group need hockey more than any other age certainly more than the little fellows who are thrown into rough hockey competition long before they can even okate properly i would hopefully suggest that the writer view some of the juvenile games first hand before drawing such unfair conclusions in the future mr and mrs ted jones stouffvilie editors note the writer has been watching juvenile league games for 23 years f war on ice by jim thomas barry is my oldest boy hes nine and a player with john roe i ford in the novice league of the stouffvilie minor hockey association while he seemed anxious enough to play come signing time last september his attitude in the months that have followed has changed hes no longer enthusiastic kind of hohum about the whole thing unlike last season when a j team of horses couldnt have kept him out of the rink fa the terrible truth is its no longer a fun thing instead its more of an ordeal for i him and for me and all the time i try and tell him that goals and assists of which he has none are not all that important he replies that hed just as soon engage in a game of shinny out on the road using a makeshift net and a rubber ball there the action is nonstop except for an occasional side- trip to the bathroom no whistles no off sides no rules i dont argue with this j except to point out that to become a good skater a kid has to do more than run up and down the street he has to skate so far my persistence has met with some success at least hes still playing even though his mother adjusts everything except his jock and t practically carry him to the car but his obvious lack of enthusiasm is not my greatest concern its his sudden interest in the more cruder aspects of the sport that puts a frothy taste in my 5 mouth hey dad he said following his teams most recent 32 loss did you see me smash that boy into the boards i was sure id get a penalty but i guess the i referee missed it his obvious elation over the incident seemed to indicate that a seat in the sin- bin was some kind of throne of glory the mark of a real man he soon learned ii otherwise for while i hadnt seen him smash anyone he only weighs pounds i gave him my personal im- pression of fellows who play hockey in this fashion but jim dorey he protested i began to strangle the steering wheel in my bare hands so he switched thej subject his boasting ceased but everything ive tried to teach hirrfj about clean play good sportsmanship etc went out the window saturday ii accompanied him to a jr b game in the arena wexford vs aurora scheduled for 2 pm i left at four with still one period to go so did a lot of other folks now dont get me wrong the hockey what little there was was great fine passing plays good goaltending a closi score and the largest crowd of the season but all points on the affirmative sidi were buried under an avalanche of fights- i at times turning the rink into a com bination boxing and wrestling ring thfl whole scene writhing bodies and flailin fists was repulsive to me and i hope my son to make matters even worse if was possible we had the misfortu sit next to some proaurora clod only desire was to witness the uh the cleaving of some poor wexff head neatly and cleanly at the he undoubtedly departed a disappointed as we made our early e ticipated the obvious and the came before we had reached ti how come bary asked yo not to play rough and yet those fight all the time he deserved an answer well i replied when thi your age they wouldnt listen father and now they think the good to listen to anyone he seemed satisfied but i won for sure until saturday when jol ford meets turner construction am notice board through the assistance of several sponsors the whitchurchstouf recreation association has
