markham phone 215112 29729s7 22 smile a mil with arrow dear sir once again we see religious organizations calling for more financial aid from the government leaving aside all the distrust built up in the past one wonders why religious denominations persist in a role in education where in his teachings did jesus christ call for the establishment of schools for the purpose of academic education go build your churches share gods word he said we see in revelations that out of evil came civilization with seven main streams of knowledge five have been egyptian assyrian babylonian persian greek cne is now roman while in this time civilization was wounded until death by the coming of jesus christ one is yet to come our present western civilization if we read our history it is quite obvious that the beast which came out of the ground is the church which gave its power to the kings of our present civilization as the kings lost their power so the church lost its influence it is time that the church heeded christs call to his people the church to come out of her civilization to stand apart from education politics business to work towards gods word as given to us by jesus christ al gregory united church sunday sept 19 1971 at 230 pm rev speaker harold moddle music mrs w koster and mrs h nauta england times have changed mrs helen dewitt of stouffville recently stopped in at the tribune office and left a smaii pocket diary the diary written by mrs dewitts great grandfather robert curtis details a trip to england 85 years ago robert curtis lived in mongolia and kept the genera store and post office in that village he set out on his trip to the old country on june 3 1886 the diary speaks of another era an era when longdistance travel was done almost exclusively by train after taking a train from unionville to toronto mr curtis changed and took a train to new york city via grimsby st catherines niagara falls buffalo and jersey city he em barked on the city of chicago a 486foot steamship there is much in the diary which seems naive to a modern reader a touch of almost childish wonder mr curtis describes the ship thus this grat ship steams by 10 hor sepower engines in the reign of queen victoria even jules verne couldnt foresee twentyfive or thirty- thousand horsepower engines some things never change though mr curtis recorded that he was miserably seasick on the voyage he felt better on the return trip but wrote with a touch of despair i am well this morning but do not know if it will last prices have changed also mr curtis mentions a few figures fat steers 20 pounds each a 23 year old horse 40 pounds a good dinner for 12 cents railway fare from jersey city to toronto was 1185 apparently 86 wasnt a good year for english farmers a cow is worth from 16 to 20 shillings 3 or 4 years ago was worth 20 to 30 shillings mr curtis mentioned a man who paid 39 shillings apiece for 10 lambs and after taking them to hull he lost 15 shillings he said you could not handle anything but what you would lose on it this provides an interesting contrast to presentday prices a roast of mutton in an average english restaurant today costs about 18 shillings while visiting his english relatives mr curtis found time to do some travelling you can hear disapproval in the lines he wrote at hull such shouting by men and women and drinking i never saw in my life before also all kinds of gambling he also wrote with a touch of homesickness hun dreds of people and i do not know one face among them the diary ends with his return home on august 7 1886 getting the
