p 12 the tribune thursday august 19 1sc1 late max reesor fine athlete markham the markham community down through the years has produced many excellent athletes but none was ever more competitive more colorful than the late- peter max reesor max reesor passed away aug 11 following a heart at tack while enjoying a game of euchre at his apartment residence 56 main street north while the suddeness of his death came as a shock to relatives and friends it was the way he would have wanted he was 74 max reesor max reesor was born june 30 1897 at lot 13 cone 7 markham the son of peter h reesor and lilly ramsey the property was originally purchased by peter reesor sr the deceaseds great- great grandfather in 1805 it was retained in the reesor family name 160 years max reesors community con nections and con tributions are endless he was a member of both the markham public school and high school boards he was an active liberal in politics serving as president of the markham twp liberal association and a devout supporter of wl mckenzie king when he became prime minister of canada in 1921 kinq in the 1940s he formed part of what was known in markham main street circles as the arm chair club getting together with four other close associates in the tremont hotel every noonhour to discuss important issues of the day of the five only milt russell survives he is a patient in sun- nybrook hospital others were peter stewart ob heise and jack burns at the age of 17 max reesor joined the canadian army serving overseas with the 52nd battery it was while stationed in france he was awarded the military medal a presentation made to him per sonally in 1919 by the duke of windsor of all his interests sports ranked number one he signed his first oha certificate in 1911 at the age of 14 he played with in termediate hockey teams in markham and uxbridge qualifying for a tryout with the old chicago cardinals fore runners of the present day black hawks then 33 he was ruled ineligible because of age to hold a regular position with the club for 18 years max worked as an oha referee receiving one of the original gold stick awards from mr hockey himself wm a hewitt he prized it highly stouffville was to know of max reesors athletic ability too he was a catcher for many years with the hardball club teaming up with earl cook on several occasions earl visited the parlors friday to pay his respects as in hockey and baseball so in football lawn bowling and curling max reesors determination to be the best led teams to district and ontario championships a plaque on the ajh eckardt
