mccracken said that some boats of exceptionally large horsepower are being used on musselmans lake and residents are worried some cottagers have placed special buoys to keep the boats away from swimming areas they dont seem to do much good though said mr mc cracken some of these clowns are almost running the buoys down the association is also con cerned about weeds in vacant lots throughout the area mayor ken laushway said that this matter had been discussed previously in council and an attempt is being made to discover who owns the land where many highpowered boats are launched wed like a survey similar to that done at prestons lake said mayor laushway could your association carry this out mr mccracken assured council that his group would be glad to carry out such a poll and to bylaw enforcement officer according to mr mccracken the association has 112 mem bers at present taxes on lot 214 but cant build house stouffville if you own a lot in the whitchurch stouff ville area youd better make sure its properly assessed anyone who pays taxes for a building lot which turns out not to be a building lot is in an awk ward position planning committee on july 6 heard a presentation by mr joseph w sherman mr sherman owns two tenacre parcels on the 6th concession which were assessed for tax purposes as building lots he decided to sell the properties when taxes went from 85 to 214 in 1969 he has separate deeds for the two lots and has always paid assessments on them separately a prospective purchaser for one lot withdrew when told he could not build on ten acres according to a bylaw lots for building purposes must be a minimum of 25 acres the committee sympathized with mr sherman who has been paying an unduly high tax rate since 1963 councillor merlyn baker sharply criticized assessment procedures being used by the province he added i think its a shame theres been so little liaison on these matters other members echoed his sentiments and mayor ken laushway told mr sherman that his was not the only case where this has happened as to the matter of back taxes the committee was powerless to offer any redress the assessment was done by the province said committee chairman tom lonergan we cant do anything on a motion by councillor gordon ratcliff mr shermans problem will be studied when the committee begins work on a new zoning bylaw expected to be finished bv october stouffville a spokesman for century city has stated that the firm received almost no notice of last weeks uxbridge council meeting dave fitzpatrick the com panys property have a community college campus within its boundaries at thursdays meeting of regional council a presentation was made by w roy mc- cutcheon executive dean of seneca college the college wishes to build a new campus in this area and has signed an offer to purchase the former eaton property near dufferin street four miles west of aurora mr mccutcheon explained that seneca had looked into the matter carefully and wished to proceed with the acquisition of the property york regions official plan contains no provision for institutional zoning of the type required he said and this was one matter that would have to be cleared up other departments such as ontario water resources commission must also be approached the college said mr mc cutcheon wanted to know if the regional council favoured concept the executive dean stressed the community aspect of such a college mr mccutcheon indicated that college facilities would in large part be open to the general public the possibilities and the scope in this region are almost unlimited he said aurora mayor dick illingworth spoke out strongly in favor of the college this is something weve tried for since 1565 he said i will certainly support the idea richmond hill mayor bill lazenby asked why the college had chosen this site rather than a larger population centre mccutcheon explained that the major advantage was the fact that existing buildings could be easily converted for college use we would expect to have a few programs operating by september he said i he added however that even if matters proceed smoothly a full daydiploma course would probably not open until sep tember of 1972 councillor don plaxton a member of the colleges board of governors opposed mayor uizenbys suggestion that the matter be deferred and studied seneca he said had signed an offer to purchase which expires august 16 the price is said to be about lj million dollars markham mayor tony roman supported mr plaxton as did mayor illingworth who termed the project one of the best and most exciting ideas ive heard in a long time a resolution to defer councils consideration of the project was defeated during discussion councillor plaxton pointed out that if senecas new campus were built in an area of high population the logical choice would be downsview gladys rolling mayor of east gwillimbury said the new campus would be most advantageous and added that she would be happy to see it become a reality council gave nearunanimous support to a resolution ap proving the idea in principle seneca will now conduct negotiations with other con cerned parties in order to complete details of land pur chase and alterations at mondays meeting of aurora council mayor illingworth suggested the 696- acre site could be used for a domed stadium and multisport complex associated with the seneca campus such a stadium similar to one previously proposed in toronto would be suitable for training olym- picclass athletes he said king city
