uxbridge the tranquility of this country scene was recently shattered by movie cameras filming a scene in ripofp directed and produced by donald shevile and bennett foley of phoenix productions the movie will be released in toronto next fall pictured above is the sandford general store rr2 uxbridge m lee recently i visited muskegon michigan to study a new and what appears to be the most logical method of dealing with the sewage problems of the york region muskegon county has been alarmed would like to you know how to ensure your capacity to buy life insurance regard less of how your health inadequately treated domestic and in dustrial sewage the area is now proceeding with a major new sewage treatment program which should solve the total problem and help their local agriculture it involves spraying the sewage effluent containing phosphates and nitrates over several thousand acres of land in the county thus enhancing plant growth on land instead of algae in the water the effluent being chlorinated to kill bacteria does not present a health hazard a few muskegon environmental experts are concerned about the plan because the soil in the county is sandy and the water table is high this creates some risk that the phosphates and nitrates will not be fully utilized and will continue to pass into the rivers and lakes as they do here but these same people told me that most of the highlands north of toronto provide an ideal area for effluent irrigation most of our soil is clay loam our open land is largely used for agrucultural and recreational purposes and most of the water table is urgently needed i i the mutual life of canadaj roxy markham 2943355 i owcw i shcwfb i 730 pj bfm some machines are too hot 4f for any man to handle the hard rioe i i i i tickets or diverting our treated sewage effluent from our streams of lake on tario where they now flow into irrigation systems this can be done all year round through perforated plastic pipe systems and in the warmer months using con ventional sprayer systems and retaining excess winter effluent in large holding reservoirs an irriga tion program to recycle our waste phosphates and nitrates would enable us to safely extend existing up stream plants including the west don the rich mond hill the thorn- hill and markham plants in fact fully serviced land using package plants could be developed throughout the toronto centred region this would permit much more acceptable and practical development than the present government plan the latter would make a sewage effluent lagoon of lake ontario recycling by irrigation would mean that we could finally get ahead with housing programs to meet pressing needs it is time we did something instead of waiting for more useless studies and impractical proposals by various government bodies the kiwanis fire works display scheduled for may 24 was cancelled due to rain the show has been postponed until friday may 28 at the markham fair grounds todays farmer us ing taking place in york county has more than doubled over the past vear york county sheriff philip ambrose an nounced last week between jan 1 and may 1 this year 242 tenants and householders were evicted from their homes mr ambrose said during the same period last year there were 115 evictions this years figures for january jumped from 32 to 47 february from 20 to 40 march from 26 to 85 and april from 37 to 70 but sheriff ambrose is reluctant to pin the blame on canadas sagging economy which he says is only one of the factors at work this year there will be very many more evictions than last year he says in sisting that general moral conditions are as responsible for the increase as economic conditions he cites a general breakdown in family life and changes in the landlordtenant act as key
