old hagerman publicschooi be used as a summer youth hostel the decision was handed down monday night after it was learned it would cost 12000 to put the building in suitable repair jas thomas uxbridge garbage controls opposition voiced by operators goodwood appearing before uxbridge township council and ontario government rep resentatives messrs beech and ped- erson operators of two dumping areas in the township claimed 1 that new government regulations calling for all refuse to be buried rather than burned were impractical the dumps are presently handling the garbage from stouffville and uxbridge town mr stuart campbell and dr watkins from the dept of energy and resources advised that operators had been told of the change last fall and the new act calling for fill instead of burn came into force in march this year the permit held by mr beech expires this july while the pederson dump is already operating without licence councillor hendy said that an ap plication to build an incinerator had been refused by the department but rep resentatives claimed no knowledge of this action mr beech said that the idea of digging six- ft holes and then covering them im mediately wouldnt work when you could have as many as fourteen trucks there at one time he added that the department had no knowledge of the winter conditions father mr leslie morgason mrs stewart vague entertained relatives and neighbors at a tupperware party mr campbell said that the garbage could be buried for 4 aton and built on after 25 years the use of the gravel pits was not advised as their holes were sometimes below the level of the water table and this was a watershed area mr campbell acknowledged that the cost would be more but he said there was a responsibility to the two municipalities which had contracted to dump there and mr beech should co operate as to what could happen should the dumps be closed the government spokes man said that the garbage would have to be trucked to toronto or peterboro incinerators at double the cost he told council that the department had been trying for some time to get the cooperation of the operators to the new regulations but without success cancer society passes 3600 goal stouffville complete returns from the annual april campaign conducted by the canadian cancer society arent in yet but spokesmen for the organization predict they will ex ceed their 1971 goal of 3600 although 3200 was collected by volunteers canvassing the stouffville area and 32525 was raised from the onenight fashion show held at sleepy hollow golf and country club cam paign spokesmen credit the lion- sponsored bikeathon with putting them over their top we definitely wouldnt have suc ceeded without the bikeathon said mrs barbara schell returns officer she anticipates the society will receive over 1000 from the event last year in total 3400 was raised mrs charles con ner rrl unionville spent two weeks with cousins mr and mrs abram n lehman carlisle penn sylvania she was also a guest at the 59th wedding anniversary celebration for mr and mrs jesse leh man harrisburg yorksimcoe last month the york- simcoe liberal association held a fundraising dinner in aurora the guest speaker was hon joe greene minister of energy mines and resources the ticket price was 25 per person of which about half goes to cover the cost of the banquet in commenting on the event john roberts mp is hopeful everyone who attended had a pleasant time however he admits several have been critical claiming the fee was such that only a privileged group could afford to be present questions posed were how can the association organize meetings open only to the welltodo does this not betray the so- called principles of participation mr roberts suggests such argument confuses two things the question of par ticipation and the problem of fund raising he feels the york- simcoe association has done much to encourage greater citizen involvement he also suggests that through speaking en gagements ques tionnaires news letters a weekly column and regular office hours he per sonally has en deavored to keep in close touch with the people we really have tried to make the liberal party in york- simcoe open to everyone who is in terested he says however mr roberts points out activity of- this kind does not raise election funds for example his 1968 election campaign cost close to 16000 his conservative opponent spent almost twice that much and the ndp candidate considerably less about onequarter of the 16000 was met by the funds of the liberal partv of canada leaving about 12000 to be raised through other means one such means says mr roberts is a gathering like the joe greene dinner the yorksimcoe member feels we have reached the state where election ex penses of political parties should be recognized as for the public good and should be supported by the public treasury the highest amount spent in 1968 by a federal candidate was approximately 70000
