town of whitchurch stouffville the see it way by mayor ken laushway whitchlrchstouffville each week through the tribune ken laushway mayor town of whitchurchstouffville answers questions on issues of local interest they are posed by the tribune or by ratepayers through the tribune question it was my understanding that reassessment had been completed in the former county of york however the council town of whitchurchstouffville has requested this area be reassessed again why is this necessary answer there are too many inequities between individual properties some have been corrected but many have not there has also been too great a shift in the tax load from industrial and commercial to farm and residential the spread in assessments even on comparable land on neigh boring lots leads me to believe that the assessors themselves utilized varying sets of value standards a complete reassessment will cost ad ditional money but assessment appeals cost money too i feel there are many in the area who did not file an appeal but had just cause to do so question lias century city developments limited fallen into arrears in payment of taxes on property owned within the former village of stouffville and if so what steps can be taken to collect it answer i feel it both unwise and unethical to make public comment concerning anyones taxes whether paid or unpaid every ratepayer has the privilege to contact the municipal office and request to see anything that pertains to the operation of the town with regard to delinquent tax ac counts if payments fall behind for a period thursday considerable this has been one of the worst winters for ice and snow the municipality has experienced for many years question do you feel the town of whitchurchstouffville should be included in bells freecall area to toronto answer there is no such thing as a free call service if ap proved i would 3 dr bouchard still makes house calls the liny villoge of rock island quebec gels on annual average snowfall of 100 inches and the temperature can sit below zero for weeks so when dr gilles bouchards patients cant get to him he goes to theni by volkswagen they soy around rock islond that it makes folks feel better just seeing his little red vw chugging about the countryside but for him a volkswagen is more o necessity than an eccentricity in fact its just what the doctor ordered his practice covers 500 square miles and what with churning through drifts along snowchoked beckroads in winter or slogging through mud ond slush in the spring he logs 15000 miles a year and while travel by volkswagen isnt the fast est method known to man we were delighted to hear that a bug can still win a race with the stork one subzero morning a baby was on the way 20 miles from town but the doctor wasnt his other car a big fast sedan wouldnt start whot to do in spite of the cold the bug started right away says dr bouchard and i made it just in the nick of time mother baby doctor and volks wagen attention the particular strike in question with a p has been settled in the opinion of the union successfully but the issue you raised is still an important one even though a month has passed your editorial 1 complained that picket signs were set up at the entrance to the stouffville shopping plaza and that all the merchants in the plaza not involved in the a p strike were innocent victims whose business would suffer we agree with you and we have fought unsuccessfully to have the law in this matter changed but as the law stands shopping plazas have been suggest the rate in crease on a private line would be about 25 per year and about 60 a year for a business phone before that additional charge is arbitrarily assessed against all residents i feel at least 70 percent of the 640 exchange subscribers should favor it bell telephone conducted a survey here four years ago but there is no problem requesting them to do it again i know of many people with limited ca requirements to toronto who are op posed to any additional expense as for me if i want to place such a call i expect to pay for it i do not expect others who neither want it or need it to subsidize the cost taftow which was involved in the strike and made them picket at the main entrance to the plaza during the strike against a p this happened on a daily basis we share your feelings for merchants who are not involved in the strike we had no axe to grind with them and we sincerely wanted to picket immediately in front of the a p stores but without fail the minute the pickets set foot on the plaza police were called and the picketers were moved back on to the plaza front our union and the ontario federation of labour would be most happy to join with merchants at any time to petition the ontario government to change this unjust legislation l victor pathe pres ontario retail council dear mr thomas i have noted the recent editorial in the tribune entitled still dragging their feet and i wish to take this opportunity to offer some related com mentary- while i appreciate your concern for the proposed century city development i should like to dispel certain misconceptions about the governments alleged inaction in particular i question your suggestion that nothing has happened since- the toronto centred region plan was introduced back in may 1969 to begin with the initial presentation of design for development the toronto centred region took place on may 5 1970 since that time the ontario government has made every effort to proceed as quickly as possible with the refinement of the concept as you know we have requested that public and private briefs be submitted so that the people at large have the opportunity for comment before any final policy decisions are taken although the deadline for receipt of these briefs was september 30 many are still coming in in keeping with its principle of widespread par ticipation the ontario government intends to give full consideration to all recom mendations and suggestions we are still in the process of assessing these briefs and it will be necessary to resolve a number of questions before we proceed into ways and means of implementation as well i think it is fair to point out that the area encompassed by the plan a 90 mile radius of toronto with the heaviest concent ration of population in the province involves a great number of municipalities both large and small i hope it will be obvious that we cannot resolve within a few days or weeks all of the questions and conflicts that arise from a plan of this magnitude
