cub attack heifer near orillia rancher harvey oxby of sadowa about20 miles north east of orillia had a midnight meetin with a ggopound bear and her cub friday night but all three parties escaped uninjured the only casualty was a twoyearold heifer neighbors told oxby they had heard sounds indicating a cow was in trouble near one corner of his ranch armed with a flashlight and axe oxby tracked down the sounds and came face to face with a bear cub and the prostrate cow he frightened the cub away by shouting then ran back to the house to get his rifle returning to the scene he was confronted by both cub and mother standing over the cow oxby opened up with the rifle and fired a dozen shots all of which missed but frightened the animals away the cows neck cord had been snapped by the bears
