series will get under way with lindsay walkwoods being the visiting team both teams will be treated to good playing fields as the local diamond is one of the best around this district and lindsay have their new ball park that can equal anything in some of the larger cities the locals have met their rivals on one occasion before and handed them a 61 defeat the game will get under way at 6 oclock sharp with the admission charge being 35c it should be a good game to see so come out and cheer on your favorites as they head down the home stretch to wards another tricounty cham pionship carley grove a regular with peaches girls team donned the cedar grove uniform on saturday afternoon and came up with three safe hits and a walk in four times at bat elgin mills proved their super iority over aurora by defeating their rivals to gain entry into the finals against the peaches- stouffville winner v the final contest between stouff- ville and peaches will be played on wednesday night when a record crowd is expected cedar grove girls proved too much for claremont on saturday afternoon as they came out on top by an 188 score the girls game preceded the boys softball tourna ment helen for the coming year in which they intend to enter a league with willowdale aurora richmond hill and some of the other towns of similar size they are holding a dance on sept 22nd with their organization meeting on the 21th an open night is being held in the legion hall on oct 1st all the games will be played in the hall and a membership of about 35 is hoped for stouffville red sox edged sunderland 51 on monday night in a benefit game played at sunder land for graydon hogg who was injured at the port perry tourna ment porky schell hurled a four hitter and was aided by a three bagger hit from the bat of ted cadieux a total of s700 was collected sunderland presented an allstar lineup for the contest while the locals carried only nine men green full for fridays bowling tournament the howling green was filled to capacity on friday night as the weather man gave the bowlers a perfect evening for their weekly tournament mr g hillson of agiheourt was the top man for the night with a high of three wins mr knrl beare was second best with three wins bob snowball was high with two wins while tom hammond of claremont was hiqh with one win it is important for nil those who wish i enter in the coming tournament on friday to get their entry in early to avoid disappointment markham and buttonville battle for twp championship the scene is all set for the show down between the two top teams in the markham township soft ball league as msrkham and buttonville hattle it out for top honours the outcome of the series is a toss up but the boys from buttonville may hold a slight edge because of their leadership in the league all season the anchor post on the markham squad is their ace hurler peg oneil who without injury and a little backing from his team mates will give the sluggers a real run for their money buttonville will be count ing on their two pitchers norm stunden and jack rumney to lead their team to victory and no doubt they will be supported as in the past years by solid hitting and fielding markham and buttonville gain ed their right to enter the final round of the playoffs by downing unionville and thornhill both teams were forced to go all out in their respective series and earned the right to represent the league in the finals in the first game played in unionville between thornhill and buttonville the yonge st crew took a six run lead in the first few innings but threw the game away in the later stages when buttonville drew two runs ahead itwas the worst exhibition of sportmanship ever displayed in the district with the final score reading buttonville 28 thornhill 8 in the return contest both teams battled hard with the score being in doubt up until the final innings buttonville edged their rivals 109 norm stunden hurled both games for the fourth concession sluggers markham lost the first contest to unionville 53 but came back to take the next two 61 and 20 in the third game one of the largest crowds to sit in at a local softball match cheered their respective teams on as they battled down to the final innings pitcher oneil put on a dazzling display on the mound for markham swinging out one batter after another bob petch did the receiving back of the plate and proved himself to be one of the best catchers in the league often on throws to secpnd base bob would be found covering up peacnes edge sffouffville 109 to deadlock semi final series peaches girls came through on monday night to tie up their series with stouffville and force a decid ing game to be played this week no doubt this has been one of the weirdest series ever to be played in this district with both teams winning their home games stouff ville took the first contest 1411 but peaches came back to square the series by taking the second game 205 the locals caught fire here on friday night as they handed the seventh concession crew a decisive 183 defeat but once again peaches put themselves on even terms with the rivals by edging them 109 at unionville on monday night in the fourth game stouffville scored one run in the first innings as erla holden singled helen snowball flied to centre field but gertie drewery received a free ticket to first myrtle staley singled to bring erla across with the one run jean thorvaldson singled to load the bases but joan haines flied to carley grove at left field for the second out carolyn haines singled but marian reid cut the runner off at the plate to retire the side peaches pulled into the lead in their turn at bat as nelda elson pat smith and eleanor reid came in to score with two down mari lyn johnston doubled maureen mustard singled and marian reed walked to load the bases but car- ley grove flied to myrtle staley to end the rally pat lehman erla holden and helen snowball went down in order in the top half of the second but peaches continued their base running as they added two more runs to their total pat smith and fern hoover crossed the plate for the rural squad runs a double by helen snowball brought peggy white in with one run to make the score read 52 but once again the peaches crew added runs to their total as pat smith eleanor reid and marilyn john ston scored joan haines came in to relieve myrtle staley on the mound and held peaches to but one more run although stouffville was trail ing 93 the game was far from over as six runs came across the plate to tie the game since the contest was so close the umpire decided that seven innings should be completed and although the players had to play almost by moonlight the ball game went on erla holden helen snowball and gertie drewery went down in order but peaches with one down managed to get eleanor reid on base with a single carley grove reached first on an error and flor ence anderson walked to load the bases on the next pitch the ball went wild and eleanor reid stole home to end the game cook hurls sensational two hitter for semifinal baseball victory on wednesday night of last week the local crew put on the most thrilling exhibition of ball we have seen this season as they edged sunderland 21 to take the semifinal round and advance into the round robin series with the remaining five winners local hurler earl cook put on a dazzling display of pitching for the homesters allowing only two hits in the entire game and strik ing out twelve batters one man after another went down swing ing as the big expro used his fast ball to good advantage while cook was proving his mastery on the mound the team stood solidly behind him in the air tight game both teams went scoreless in the first two innings but the locals went one up in the second lome schell lifted a long fly ball into left field that just touched the out stretched glove of the fielder to go over the fence for a triple jenn ings received a free ticket to first and hassard brought schell across with the first run on a short grounder ken schell came through with a nice single and as jennings rounded third in a race with the ball for the plate catcher jim beeton of sunderland snagg ed the throw and picked off the runner as he slid into home sunderland tied up the ball game in the top half of the fourth inning as a single and double brought in the tying run the play at the plate was very close but the hall slipped from the glove of catcher ken schell to let the run score the red sox came through with their winning run in the bottom of the fourth as cook lined a long well hit ball over the left field fence for a triple it appeared for a time that he would be left stranded on the third sack as smith and edwards went down on strikes but lew raxlin came up with the all important single bringing cook in to break the deadlock and win the game on the throw to the plate raxlin streaked for second but was left there as the next batter went down for the remainder of the game hurler cook threw everything in the book at the sunderland batters and they just couldnt cope with his pitching- skill two batters went down swinging in the fifth two more in the sixth and another in the seventh in the eighth inn ings the visitors began to throw their reserves into the close battle but they like the others waved the bat aimlessly at the curving ball facing elimination in their ifinal turn at bat in the top of the ninth cook struck out his twelfth batter cf the night and the other two batters flied to short stop lome schell to end the game the sunderland squad put on the best show this season as tommy welsh went all the way on the mound for the visitors he allowed six hits and gave up five walks the locals now enter the round robin finals when they meet the remain ing five winners unionville wins over peaches at claremont tournament finals spectators at the claremont softball tournament on saturday afternoon witnessed about every thing one will ever see during the entire season some neat hurling by pitcher peg oneil of mark ham a smashing home run by mac clement a sprawling one handed catch by second baseman ross wideman and a sensational catch by outfielder morley petch highlighted the three game series a team made up of a number of players from unionville and buttonville squads took on the fast stepping crew from markham in a game that was in doubt all the way unionville took a one run lead in the second innings and added another in the fourth with out reply from their opposition three more runs crossed the plate for the sixth concession crew in the fifth before markham caught fire and tied the score with a five run rally markham pulled into the lead in the sixth but their ace hurling star oneill sprained his knee while running to first and had to retire from the game pitchers don lunau and john lawrenson came in but could not hold the lead as unionville scored five runs to take the game 109 mac clement homered for unionville chuck blundell did the hurling for the winners and threw nice ball all the way in the other semifinal game peaches handed claremont a 137 defeat lloyd pascoe was on the mound for claremont while mark mills an exclipper of a few years back did the hurling for peaches the seventh concession crew drove in eleven runs in the first innings and although claremont showed signs of a rally the lead was too great for the claremont crew to overtake boomer smith relieved mills in the final innings the finals saw peaches and unionville come together in what appeared to be a close contest peaches took the lead in the first innings as two runs crossed the plate but the opposition soon brouht their bats into action to take a seven run lead in their last batting peaches scored two more runs to make the final count read unionville 9 peaches 4 blundell did his turn on the mound once more for unionville while mills and smith handled the pitching chores for peaches the victorious unionville crew received 2500 as their prize it is expected that the tournament will be an annual event at claremont spike jones and his musical de preciation revue will entertain in the coliseum at the canadian na tional exhibition for the first four days aug 24 to 28 there will be matinees on all but opening day as well as evening performances sunderland gains 99 draw to prolong semifinal series after building up a four run lead in the early innings of the game sunderland slipped badly and allowed the locals to pull ahead in what appeared to be a certain red sox victory however in the final innings of the seesaw battle the visitors scored three runs to take the lead for the second time in the game in the locals last battings cote singled to bring in ken schell with the tying run the umpire called the game on account of darkness both teams went scoreless in the first innings but in the second sunderland showed more hitting power than they have come up with all season the first batter grounded out hassard to jenn ings but number two doubled through cote into centre field hurler lome schell walked the next batter and on a short groun der to schell what appeared to be a sure out on a cutoff play at third davis dropped the ball to load the bases a double and three singles followed to score four runs the third out was made as pitcher schell snagged a grounder for a put out at first the locals loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second but lome schell grounded out third to first to leave the run ners stranded sunderland stretched their lead to six runs in the top of the third on a single triple and long fly to left field on the hit as the run ner was streaking to third cadieux fielded the ball in deep left field and relayed to hassard who fired to davis covering the hird sack davis picked off the runher as he i slid in amid a cloud of dust the i third batter grounded out cook to i jennings to retire the side the red sox began to show some signs of a rally in the bottom half of the third as jennings went to first when hit by a pitched ball hassard slammed a four bagger over the centre field fence to bring jennings across and break the goose egg ken schell was given a walk and cook singled but smith cote and cadieux went down in that order the locals tallied six runs in the fifth innings to take the lead in the game hassard singled and ken schell was hit with the ball to put two on bases cook flied out to centre field but smith doubled on a double error to the pitcher who fumbled the ball and then threw wild to the base cote was given a free ticket to first and cadieux and davis hit safely to bring three runs across l schell flied out but cadieux scored after the catch jennings singled i through short stop and stole second on the throw to the bag davis stole home to give the homesters an 8c lead hassard after lifting two long fowls one of them out of the park struck out to retire the side sunderland went one up again in the top of the sixth as they scored three runs some nice tagg ing on the bases by the locals held the visitors score down to the mere three that they did count k schell tagged one runner out at home as he attempted to stretch a well hit triple into a home run but was cut oir the third man to go down was caught in between second and third as the entire stouffville infield moved over tc completely surround the runner cook finally tagged the man as he sped back and forth ixjtween the bases k schell singled and cook sacri- ficed him to third smith struck out but cote singled on an error at second to bring schell in with the tying run cadieux walked but pinch hitter raxlin grounded out second to first to end the game ma cedar
