erected to fallen son by georjje abellof stouffville today the initial peace meeting is being held in korea i know that everyone in canada is joining with all of us in england in a prayer that a quick and honorable agreement can be reached to stop the fighting which can bring nothing but sorrow to the people of every country 1 see by the tribune that the people of stouffville are to have the memorial gates at the park entrance rebuilt as a memorial to those who fell in two wars far be it from me to make any comment on this matter but let me tell yon of- a memorial my family and i saw today which we will never forget following our usual sunday morning habit of going for a pic nic we decided on ashtead park a few miles from epsom which is very large and very pretty it is well known to the can 1st divi sion signals and service corps for they were stationed there in 1940 and 41 walking up farm lane which is a quiet little road with the odd lovely old house set back but mostly parkland we saw a new cement road with a sign say ing pauls place lending to wards what looked like a develop ment of new council houses state built in a woods we were sur prised to see a state development so far in the country so walked down the road for a look we rounded a bend and there before us in a circle of about two hundred yards diameter were twenty new red brick houses each was of the same design and construction there were two floors with three bedrooms and bathroom upstairs ground floor was usual sitting room dining room kitchen and hall with outbuildings and sheds of the same red brick and red tiled roofs as the houses in this setting of huge beech oak and pine trees in the background with the circle of trim friendly houses with long green front lawns the effect is like a church it was hot and sunny and even our three children seem ed to sense something here more than could be seen with the eye we stood in a grass island in the centre of the circle which was about an acre in size and as we looked it became apparent that a number of things were different here than any other council development all but four of the houses were completely detached while usually they are four family units there were no fences or hedges or walls around the front gardens there were several child ren to be seen and one or two women were at the windows but not one man but the things that struck the odd note was that there were only two colors ped houses and green grass no flower gardens this is the land of flowers where a man plants his front yard of a new house in flowers before he moves the furni ture in in the centre of the island was a small stone pillar and on it a bronze plaque we went over to read it and this is what it says these houses built by hermon marx for widows of royal air force and fleet air arm pilots capture of perra ends one of ontarios largest dbg hunts suih family is seen with pet perra in austria a tired and hungry dog be lieved toe the missing alsa tian who has been object of one of the largest dog hunts ever conducted in the pro vince of ontario was cap tured on a farm near st genevieve que without a struggle the threeyearold animal credited with saving her master joseph silih his wife julia and their two children jane and igor from captivity as they fled from their native yugoslavia for austria in june 1950 escaped from her crate at dorval que following flight from salsburg austria which preceded her owners trip to canada by a few days and crews killed in active service in memory of his son paul marx who was killed on duty with the raf in 1943 to give and not to count the cost nobody will ever give those houses an eyes right or hang a wreath on them no fuss or any thing to draw attention just a sign beneath a beech tree on a new road in an old woods pauls place but dont you think that its a wonderful memorial to those young men who lived hard and died hard a few years ago to change the subject i see by a recent paper that the greatest number yet of overseas visitors are coming here this summer with about seventyfive thousand can adians booked up they will cer tainly have a wonderful time as the pageantry exhibitions enter tainment etc that is being put on this summer will be something to remember for years they wont have to worry about food trans portation hotels or anything else because the british government is after canadian dollars like the canadian government is after american dollars yum yum yum lets have em i hear some people are sending food on ahead take an old settlers advice and dont be silly just keep your pen and a blank cheque book where you can get at them easily and get set for the time of your life you can eat like a king and better than some kings if you can pay for it mrs abell and i were in a big store last week and while she was i buying a few pennies worth of liver sausage i idly counted the kinds of european cheese for sale all unrationed of course and an average price of ten shillings a pound i got up to 29 when my wife joined me we noticed the frozen food cabinets were full as were the canned fruit cooked meat and other departments dont forget its only basic foods that are rationed and subsidized all luxury foods and goods are unrationed but of course the price automatically rations them for the bulk of the people incidentally be sure you get everything in good shape for the royal party next fall i wouldnt want them to get a bad impression of canada eating cornonthecob with rouge on the lips is considered bad taste cameras amateur cameras
