the tribune stougvuie o thursday ju 12 1951 markham man retires after 34 years on telehone work on the 17th day of march 1917 mr lyle thompson of markham strolled down his lane to the road thereby starting on a job which would take him through an era of many changes in the 34 years of service which lay ahead yes little did this young man of 25 know about the hundreds of people whom he would meet and the many miles of territory he would cover as he went from door to door installing and repairing telephones through the course of 31 years some drastic changes have taken place for some time all installations and repairs were done on foot and mr thompson recalls some days of walking a good ten miles over rough gravel roads in order to satisfy the demands of the general public later the horse and buggy made the job somewhat easier and by this mode of transportation some 50 miles could be covered in a day a jaunt from markham to whitby and back was considered all in a days work then came the trucks and motor cars winch are enjoyed by the telephone em ployees of today the winter proved to be the most difficult time and often mr thomp son tramped and even crawled over banks in order to reach his destina tion one day he recalls having to return home from pickering at 2 am the next morning his territory consisted of markham unionville pickering brooklin whitby ux- ftridge and port perry the com pany was then known as the home telephone later the woodbridge and vaughan co took it over and now the bell telephone co has recently taken control of the dis trict in all his journeys mr thompson has never been involved in an accident although he has had many narrow escapes he claims the general public has been always very cooperative and as the day of retirement draws nearer he knows that the many friends he has made will linger in his mind through the coming years on july 11 his duties as a telephone instal ler and repairman cease and he goes on three weeks holidays followed by three months leave of absence on november 1st mr thompson retires on a wellearned pension during his 31 years of faithful service mr thompson has lived through an era of great development and has seen the change from travelling on foot to the use of the modern car and truck fleets of to day and now as the days go by he may be seen busily hoeing his neatly kept garden or tending his flock of chickens but always cherished in his mind will be the memories of the many staunch friends he has made and who unite in wishing him many pleasant years of retirement costly
