falls for the first time or the elevator trip of 350 feet through solid rock the tunnel and walked the board roadway down to the rolling tossing waters at the bottom or drank from the flaming well or the trip in the cage across the whirl pool rapids to seeing the red flowered chestnut trees will have something to remember with pleasure and awe for the remain der of their lives council decision tender ends in on truck stalemate while a total of four tenders were received for a new truck for the pickering twp road dept after two meetings of heated dis cussion council could not arrive at a decision as to who should receive the contract prices for the four- ton truck ranged from a low of 5145 to a high of g551 at a special meeting on thurs day night council arrived at a dead lock over the question of which of two makes they should purchase deputyreeve n e mcewen was supjwrted in his choice by coun cillor zinkie while councillors balsdon and burke were just as determined that a different tender should be accepted although the price of the truck favoured by messrs mcewen and zinkie was approximately 1500 more than the one selected by their fellow coun cillors the deputyreeve declared that it was worth the difference th deadlock left it strictly up to reeve westney for the deciding vote but he declined to any action ive voted on lots of things but i wont vote on this declared the reeve its a shame that the reeve has to be put over a barrel as much as he has commented councillor balsdon he has as much right to exer cise his franchise as any other man on this council argued the deputyreeve ive seen lots of tenders voted on but this is the worse mess that ive seen yet i think we should throw the whole thing out continued the deputy- reeve seeing no chance to break the deadlock the subject was dropped for the present time brougham gravel going into fields and ditches says deputy reeve widow of former blacksmith dies word was received in claremont on monday morning of the passing of mrs ella risebrough at wemb ley in the peace river district the late mrs risebrough was the widow of william risebrough who operated a blacksmith shop in claremont some forty years ago youngest of a family of nine children born to james and mary dolphin 8th con of pickering the deceased went west with her hus band some thirtyfive years ago her husband predeceased her thirty years ago sole survivor is a brother dun can of claremont and last remain ing member of the family while no definite word had been received if calcium chloride will keep our roads in good condition by all means let us put it on declared deputyreeve n e mcewen at a meeting of the pickering town ship council on thursday night the discussion centred around the purchase of three more carloads of calcium in addition to the six car loads that have already been bought it was agreed by the coun cillors that the job of spreading the chloride over the roads was very satisfactory but some of them felt that there should be more of it not only in front of the various resid ences but all along the road as the subject of roads continued other details became involved and soon the entire council were in a heated discussion deputyreeve mcewen declared that a bi amount of the gravel that was be ing put on the roads in pickering twp was good enough for country roads but the roads in pickering should not be regarded as country roads considering the travel they have to stand up to youre just throwing money away exclaimed the deputy- reeve its all right to put that kind of gravel on roads up north somewhere but down here they have to be surfaced right as the discussion wavered back and forth among the councillors it was made known by road supt roy ward that the cost of covering all roads with calcium chloride would amount to approximately 50000 were spending 100000 in repairs on roads and bridges claimed x e mcewen deputyreeve mcewen said that some of the roads where there are only one or two people living on them or where their houses are situated a long way from the road it would not be so necessary to cover the entire road with calcium but on the much travelled roads the calcium should be spread over the entire surface the council then turned their minds to the desires of residents living on private roads n e mc ewen objected strongly to the ideas of having calcium chloride put on private roads would you expect the calcium chloride to be put on your lane and around your house exclaimed the deputyreeve addressing the councillors if these people want to pay for calcium on private roads let us put it on argued councillor fred zinkie let someone else put it on said deputyreeve mcewen it would cost them too much continued councillor zinkie municipalities should not go into competitive business com mented n b mcewen we have enough work to do without doing private jobs these esidents pay taxes and own part of the machinery so why dont we give them some use of it declared councillor balsden reeveavestney brought forth the thought that some of the residents had already iiw head and bought calcium out of their own pockets and if the council went ahead and purchased the chloride for the other residents there would be trouble the council then agreed that they should forget about the private roads under those circum stances the move to purchase the extra three carloads of calcium was defeated road supt ward said that there was still quite a bit of calcium left and that there was no use buying more if it was just going to lay around writ filed for claremont couple several claims for damages aris ing from the alleged bad condition of ontario county roads have been received by the county council at its june session which
