her parents mrs j mecullough has taken up residence in her village home again and we wish her many years of health anu happiness the members of the united church tta are planning their annual fall bazaar which will be held on nov 3rd the members of the ladies auxiliary were entertained in uxbridge by the auxiliary on fri day evening the ladies reported a very successful evening the ladies auxiliary is holding a euchre on monday evening march 26 at s30 oclock in the legion hall there will be six prizes and lunch served come and have a good time the fire brigade ivi called sat urday afternoon to extinguish a chimney fire at the home of mr lester mccuhotigh fortunately it burned out before any assistance was required joint church services will be held on good friday evening in the united church rev g davi son of the baptist church will deliver the message and the choir will sing everyone is invited to this very important annual church event what might have been a fatal accident quilt in com petition with district institutes to be judged at the annual meeting the goodfellowship class held their regular meeting on tuesday evening with an attendance of 33 adults and 7 children the worship service consisted of reading the last supper by mrs 1 morgan using opportunities for service by mrs w evans and the risen christ by the chairman mrs m johnson a biography on the life of the late rev peter brice of metropolitan church toronto and former moderator of the united church of canada was given by the teacher of the class hymns there is a green hill he liveth long who liveth and hostess passing of a beloved mother the death occurred in claremont on wednesday evening march 11 of mrs davifl gregg mrs gregg the former elizabeth ellen little was born in elles- mere searboro township in 1s76 and had she lived to the end of march would have attained her 70th year mrs gregg was a person of many ialents uerhaps the greatest be- ng a loving mother a sympathetic and kind neighbour she was a greatfjlover of flowers which she delighted in sharing her regular visitations among the shutins of the community and her help in the organization of the wms of which she was a life member will be greatly missed she was a past- president of the womens institute and a sunday school teacher in the claremont united church at one time mrs gregg taught school in claremont and it was while teaching here that she met david gregg fifty years ago this coming april they were married and settled on a farm on the ninth concession of pickering about two miles west of claremont remaining there until they retired a few years ago to reside in clare mont david gregg predeceased his wife in june of 191s four children remain to mourn their mother hugh residing on the home farm gordon of malar- tic isabel and jean of toronto there is also one grandchild one brotherinlaw mr tom gregg residing in claremont also sur vives and a sisterinlaw mrs gondy also residing in claremont funeral service was held last saturday in claremont united church conducted by rev h lackey pallbearers were messrs frank barclay lome jones ken neth reesor chas cooper edgar ward and will evans interment was made in claremont union cemetery robert found following an illness of four weeks the death occurred in the oshawa general hospital of robert found beloved husband of the former lizzie arrowsmith in his 83rd year a native of devonshire england the deceased came to canada with his parents in 1s89 and settled in the pickering district a farmer all his life mr found retired to pickering in the spring of 1541 when defence industries limited established the ajax shell filling plant and took over the farm which he had operated for a num ber of years mr found was a member of the pickering united church besides his wife he leaves to mourn his passing one daughter mrs edgar aliman merty of tor onto and three sons gordon and ray of pickering and cecil of markham also surviving is a brother george found of courtiee the funeral service was held on sunday march 18 conducted by rev young assisted by rev robinson interment was made in erskine cemetery uxbridge gets new fire truck a new 10000 fire engine arrived in uxbridge during the weekend three months late the 500gallon pumper has been on order several months and in the meantime the uxbridge volunteer brigade has successfully fought a number of sizable fires on one occasion however a barn was destroyed with a total loss of 9000 because firemen said their old pumper would not operate and their supply of nose was too short to reach the blaze the truck will serve scott and part of uxbridge townships on payment of a stipulated sum for each fire brougham special easter service will be held in st johns church from an attack of meningitis and at time of writing she was some better mr and mrs r middleton of port hope called on his brother and sisterinlaw mr and mrs ross middleton on sunday sympathy is extended to mr ross middleton in the loss of his brother the late fred middleton who passed away suddenly last sunday the euchre in the hall on tues day night sponsored by the womans institute had the follow ing winners mrs h malcolm mrs hardy mrs nighswander mr w a knox mr manson ellicott and clifford hardy mr r d miller has been con fined to his bed clue to an attack o flu for the past couple of weeks but is now some better mrs m harlock and mrs l w sheppard are also improving and able to be up mrs d a beer is still confined to bed we wish these people a speedy recovery the young peoples union is holding an open meeting in the church on thursday march 22 and at 830 pm films will be shown a- very enjoyable evening was held in the hall on friday evenin whei the board of stewards of st been received from mr and mrs brows nee helen south pickering farmers turned down in request for police cost exemption a motion by councillor clare concession balsdon and councillor milton burk to grant south township farmers exemption from the heavy police costs being entailed by this part of the municipality was defeated on friday when it was placed before pickering council mr alan lishman led a delegation of farmers from south of the 3rd concession requesting that their buildings only should be taxed for police purposes a petition con taining the names ol 93 farmers was also tabled the total cost of policing which may mount to nearly 10000 this year if all the additions of men and new equip ment are made is now shouldered by the ratepayers south of the 3rd at the present time the assess ment act provides that lands and buildings may be exempt for police purposes but not lands alone and it was on this informa tion that council based their final decision to turn down the request it may be some time before the proposed clover leaf on the new lakeshore highway will be con structed between lots 28 and 29 fairport beach residents object- hold folk school at sky loft lodge a folk school planned for easter week is being held at sky loft lodge in the dagmar hills of ontario county about eight miles northwest of brooklin and six miles south of uxbridge the school is a joint project of the durham and ontario federa tions of agriculture who are hop ing to enlist the interest and atten dance of approximately thirty young people in the 1s30 age group it will be conducted by the meeting this being grandmothers day the program consisted of singing by twelve grandmothers accompanied by mrs harvey at the piano a paper written on grandmothers by mrs t c brown was read by mrs c burrows a reading was given by mrs norton on grand fathers a contest prepared by mrs wm gray brought the meeting to a close lunch was then served by the hostesses mrs d mairs mrs manson ellicott mrs ray ellicott and mrs c burrows who replaced mrs harlock who was ill the march meeting of the wms of st johns church was held on thursday march 15 at the home of mrs d mairs with a large attendance mrs in honour of mrs w white at her home on sunday there is still a number sick with the flu and colds mr and mrs cecil jones attend ed the funeral on monday at dray ton of his aunt the late mrs geo audd the former jennie jones there will be a euchre party at the alt zion school on thursday night march 22 the mission band will meet on friday march 23rd at the home of mrs ralph jones next sunday march
