sunday it looks from here as if the final sr series in the local hockey group wont get underway until sometime next week markham trounced alliston in handy fashion in their first meeting then just scraped through with a 76 win in alliston friday night tlie restup for the balance of this week should give the clippers a chance to get their flu stricken players back on their feet this seasons version of the owen sound mercurys shows a lot of promise of eventually becoming the owners of the famous allan cup theyre the most powerful contenders by all accounts the fact that the mann cup went to that city last season is an incen tive to the mercs to add the can adian amateur hockey trophy to owen sounds collection the third markhamalliston playoff semifinal game in the oha senior b playoff has had to be set ahead a few days owing to an orha game in the allis ton arena markham took the first game from alliston by a wide margin but just squeezed through 76 in the second encounter despite the delay its expected that the series will wind up this week with the senior b group final opening the fore part of next week despite the shortage of players the display put up by the clippers in saturday nights encounter with owen sound was their poorest showing of the season in fact it was so bad that management heads may take steps to enforce a heavier coaching hand in satur days exhibition the locals second line couch hopper and mccrone alternating with sayliss might as well have been left at home and made the poorest showing of all its high time some of these lads got it into their heads that theyve got a long way to go yet before theyre good enough to ignore coaching advice once a player has reached the point where he thinks hes beyond leai ning its time for him to hang up his gear when he reaches that point he can only go one way and thats down no less than eleven of the fifteen goals on saturday night were scored a- gainst this weak second line the lewis line was best scoring three with only two against cambray takes series opener cambray intermediates squeezed out a 65 win over brougham here on saturday night in the first game of their best twooutofthree playoff series in the orha the second game is slated for cambray this wednesday night trout season set to open on april 28 fishing season for speckled trout brown trout rainbow trout and for pickerel in ontario will open this year on april 28 the normal opening date is may 1st but as that falls on a tuesday the lands department set back the start of the season to the pre ceding saturday guelph aggies tossed out rrkslau bxtehs 2nd round disqualification of the ontario agricultural college entry in orha senior division play has placed breslau redshirts in the second round of the playoffs it will be recalled that breslau and ilalibutlon played in the local arena last season for the senior championship last years allontario cham pions were grouped with oac and recently won the first of what was to have been a fivegame series by an 113 score convener lack feasby of kitch ener notified breslau that horace ovenden of wainfleet secretary of the orha has expelled the aggies for lack of cooperation in arranging further games in the series breslau expects to meet the shorthanded clippers outplay mercurys but lose 73 winner of the league in the the clippers once again display ing their old form put up a stub born battle against their playoff rivals owen sound but gillson in the mercury cage proved a stumb ling blotk in the way of the flying clipper marksmen as he pulled off some thirty stops while warriner in the locals cage came to the rescue on twenty occasions the clippers were playing without the services of three forwards and their regular goaltender sayliss stark and minton have been bitten by the flu bug and were unable to dress warriner sub stituted in the nets for rhodes who is still on the sidelines for the same reason as the other players with only two lines the situation looked almost desperate and to make matters worse warriner was hit a bad crack in the face by the puck during warm up before the game got underway and had to receive five stitches to close the wound even under these condi tions he turned in a good game with almost all the shots that evaded him being screened from his view the entire sixty minutes of hockey was fast and hard hitt ing and the visitors didnt seem to be able to get going as they were checked off their feet almost at every turn once inside the blue- line the mercurys made use of their hockey brains with perfect well aimed shots burlington speedy mercury pivot man was kept checked up all night and found the going unusually tough in the first ten minutes of the game the clippers showed terrific power and pressed the sounders into their own end using only two forward lines made up of lewis bangay and gibson and hccrone couch and hopper s homesters worked many smooth passing plays and only for the the great work of gillson the clippers might have run up a good score at 1341 however mcreavy broke through and passed the rubber to gillespie standing in front of the net he let go with a hard drive that bounced off warri- ners pad into the corner although the clippers continued to press they could not dent gillsons arm our and the score at the end of the first twenty minutes of play show ed the northerns holding a one goal lead the clippers outshot their rivals 124 in the period hardly had the second period gotten under way when lewis picked up a pass at centre ice and raced in alone only to be out guessed by gillson who made a spectacular stop on the play bur lington received a tripping penalty and while he was off the locals again turned on the pressure and had gillson dodging from one side of the net to the other after nine minutes of play ingoldsby took a pass from forslund and burling ton to put the mercurys two up and three minutes later bukache- ski sailed in to beat warriner on passes from mcreavy and gilles pie the clippers although trail ing by three goals never let down for a minute and near the end of the middle session gibson flew in on the owen sound net but gillson slid out to make the stop seconds later hopper romped in alone and once again gilison kicked the rubber aside in the third and final period the clippers at last cashed in on their efforts as gibson the clipper two goal man let go with a corner drive on a pass from lewis while the mercurys had two of their players serving time in the penalty box a minute later kazarian blinked the light on a three man rush and gave the visitors a 11 lead xearing the four minute mark hochberg couch and hopper combined with the latter firing a bullet drive that glanced off gill sons pad into the net the local continued to press and at 136 gib son snared his second goal with a long low shot that gillson never moved on clarke picked up an assist on the play from then on the scoring was all owen sound as burlington hayward and ingoldsby tallied in that order the final score read owen sound 7 stouffville 3 during the contest more injuries plagued the already bard hit team warriner had the misfortune of having the puck hit him in the face and was given doctors atten tion in the second period couch received a bad crack above the eye and had to be taped up wbile brad bury was hit on the side of the leg with the puck and was withdrawn from the lineup for a while later gibson had to leave the game to join his other buddies sayliss stark uhodes and minton but his injury was not considered serious the locals once they return to full strength should again be the j powerful squad that overwhelmed the majority of their rivals with woodstocknorwich i comparative ease during the regu- econd round j lar schedule mistook big fish for submarine messrs mei venn and howard st john of stouffville must have the record catch in lake simcoe they hauled in a 15pound pike last week that was nearly six feet long and a young lad who accom panied the pair jokingly remarked he thought it must be a submarine the fish was hooked in compar atively shallow water in cooks bay like simcoe only a few weeks ago roy hejton brought to town a 24 pounder which was thought to out weigh anything at the time wild brawl features third mercuryclipper playoff encounter with only minutes remaining in the third semifinal game played in owen sound on saturday night a wild fistic battle broke out among players of both teams with the chief offenders being kazarian of the mercurys and bangay of the clippers it ail started when rose was charged into the boards by kazarian and the clipper defence- man took exception to the rough treatment and tripped his heavier rival at once other players joined in the fray and as sticks and gloves were dropped bangay and kazarian came together at centre ice the rugged lacrosse and hockey star hit the clipper captain with a terrific blow and dropped him to the ice but as kazarian fell to hold bangay for the count with a headlock nick fought free and rolled his attacker over the referees stood idly by and let the two boys battle it out when satis fied that tney had each done enough damage the two players got to their feet both players were none the worse for their skirmish but were banished for the rest of the contest with minor major and match misconducts as the game was nearly over the penalties didnt have too much significance on the nights play it was need less to say that the mercurys were just too good for the locals as the 153 defeat would indicate such speedsters as burlington ingolds by forslund and gillespie form a powerful attacking crew and along with other goalbungry players the mercurys are a winning aggrega tion warriner was once again in the nets and did a good job as the mercurys labelled shots at him from every angle he handled over thirty shots as well as playing the drives that evaded him gillson was given a rather easy night with just half the stops to make ingoldsby started the scoring and was followed by hayward allum forslund and white gibson notched the lone clipper tally from lewis the second twenty minutes saw the locals match their rivals goal for goal with gibson and lewis combining on both goals hayward and ingoldsby netted two for the mercurys in the final frame the clippers turned on quite a determined attack and had the sounders backed into their own end but at the seven minute mark the play swung toward the other end of the rink forslund bagged his second goal of the night and burlington who had been kept in check throughout the entire game broke loose while the clippers were a man short midway through the final session the mercurys shifted into overdrive and poured around the clipper net gillespie tipped the puck into the cage as warriner came out to clear and burlington added his second a minute later before the end of the game ingoldsby grant and mc reavy had all blinked the light machin and clarke played well on the blueline while gibson and lewis were the main firing power up front with minton and stark still out of the lineup coach ban gay stuck to two lines but only one line showed much fighting spirit ball semipros pick bunny for local post the national baseball associa tion has appointed a j bunny morganson wellknown sports columnist of the toronto tele gram
