tottffoilk vol 61 no 45 the tribune stouffville ont march 1 1951 high school board asks councils agree to dissolve markhamstouffville area whitchurch township and stouffville hold to original agreement to erect two schools in the one area whitchurch township turned down a request from the markham- stouffville high school area board to pass a resolution calling for the dissolution of the present area and the formation of two new areas when they met for their regular meeting on friday night a similar request made to stouifviile council has been shelved for the present at least while on paper the new pro posal of the board appeared quite favorable to the two northern municipalities certain aspects of the resolution led the two councils to suspect that there was more to the idea than met the eye the resolution as worded by the board called for a request to go before the minister of education requesting a change in legislation which would permit the dissolving of the present area up to this point council members found some favor with the suggestion how ever the second clause calling for the establishment of two new areas was viewed with misgivings one of tf most puzzling features was the fact that accord ing to figures laid out for the erec tion of new schools the cost of two new buildings within the one area as favored by stouffville and whitchurch was less costly for markham village and markham township than the erection of two schools in two new areas as suggested by these same munici- palitiest the two southern municipalities have constantly maintained that they would be burdened with sixty per cent of the cost if two new schools were erected in the area as constituted at present this argument as contended by whit church and stouifviile is not correct if one considers the school boundaries as they were known in the beginning before any area was formed since at that time a two mile strip of markham township from the eastern townline to the 4th concession was included in the stouffville school setup reeve henry ogden and clerk geo storey of stoutfville attended the whitchurch council meeting and discussed the matter at some length with officials there what assurance have we that well be able to form two new areas once we let the one we have slip away contended reeve ogden this new proposition would cost them more than the one weve been offering stated clerk john crawford of whitchurch i think there are a lot of ques tions to be answered before we go into a proposition like that besides its too short a time for a decision on athing like that stated coun cillor baycroft clerks and reeves from the municipalities have been requested to attend a meeting of the board to be held in the markham school this wednesday general concensus of opinion of members of the northern councils is that the erection of two schools will provide the only amicable settlement to the school question deadlock and since considerable difficulty was experienced in form ing the present area they see no need to upset it now and run the risk of becoming involved in an entire series of new difficulties in frying to form two new areas local coop manager takes position with parent organization claude brillinger the manager of the stouifviile cooperative association for the past two years has taken a position with the united cooperatives of a variety of farm organizations until april 1914 he operated a farm in leeds county while on the farm he was an active member whitchurch will levy fifth of mill for federation of agriculture whitchurch township will this year levy onefifth of a mill on all farm lands consisting of five acres or more in support of the feder ation of agriculture council agreed to this step at their regular meeting on friday evening and instructed the clerk to prepare a bylaw to coer the appropriation this direct tax levy system is being instituted in lieu of an annual grant which the municipal ity has been making to the federa tion and follows a request from local members of the farmers fed eration for the charge at the present time vaughan township has a similar levy of one fifth of a mill and markham township contributes one sixth there was considerable discus sion concerning the change before the decision was finally reached and for a time reeve mclaugliri maintained that he still favored giving the grant rather than the levy system particularly in view of the fact the township office facilities were badly upset during building operations id be favorable to it if all the municipalities had to adopt the system stated the reeve were doing it of our own free will returned councillor mc- carron i believe stated deputyresve timbers that the mill rate is the fairest way itll come sooner or later and will gradually work into all coiners of the county im inclined to favor the mill rate if some of these municipalities get behind he move the others will have to come into it com mented councillor mccarron i dont think we should be tax ing the urban sections for a farmers organization and thats what were doing when we give a grant stated councillor baycroft im favorable to the mill rate if the office staff can handle it he concluded south k1vkk herb friday xkht south river and ajax will meet at the stouifviile arena this fri day night at 7 oclock in an omha bantam ontario whitchurch town ship this year will be held the last week in november and the first week in december rather than the late date which many councils claim conflicts with the yuletide holidays councillor e l mccarron intro duced the motion to make the change to the early election date and the clerk was instructed to prepare the necessary bylaw a bylaw ws also introduced and passed setting the salary of the township clerk at 3000 and a second bylaw placing the salary of the deputyclerk at 2300 joseph galway renew your tribune promptly clippers give thrilling display to beat mercs 53 keeping alive their chances in the oha senior a playoff series with owen sound the stouffville clippers put on a thrilling display of checking passing and net- minding on tuesday night to trim the mercurys 53 the
