mark 10 a grade 6 student at whitchurch highlands public school scored a first in his 1011 age group class at the provincials and eastern canadian championships a grade 8 student at whitchurch highlands adrian 12 placed second in his 1213 age class at the provincials held at caledon and fourth in the eastern canadian championships staged in val- leyfield quebec second provincial title tor mark it was his second straight provincial title the triathlon is a gruelling race that includes the disciplines of swimming biking and running adrian calls biking is his strongest skill as he rides 15 kilometers weekly and swims regularly at aurora he holds a membership in the york region run ners club coached by stouffvilles fred robbins the fivefoot oneinch 93pound adrian has been competing the past five years with team ontario his other sports interest is hockey hes a defencemah with the stouffville clippers minor bantams at fourfoot seveninches and weigh ing 70 pounds mark also excels at biking hes been a competitor since age five sports staff photojim mason mark gavrilov a grade 6 student at whitchurch highlands public school scored a first in his 1011 age group class at the provincial and eastern cana dian triathlon championships big brother adrian was second in ontario and fourth in eastern canada they also play rep hockey for stouffville teams he plays hockey with a stouffville while happy with what they had clipper minor peewee rep team accomplished this year the pair dont the triathlon is difficult but fun intend to rest on their laurels as they adrian says plan on competing next year gibbons finishes third in nascar series peter gibbons concluded the inaugural nascar cana dian tire series on a positive note after steering his cana dian tiremaster craft chevrolet to a secondplace finish in sundays finale in the dodge charger 250 race at kawartha speedway near peterborough the stouffville resident began the race in the 19th position before moving his hockey league contests in hunts- ville friday the spirit suffered a 63 loss to the huntsvillemus koka otters after james mcintosh scored a shorthanded goal to stake the spirit to a 1g lead in the first period the otters rallied with two unanswered goals to take a 21 advantage into the dressing room the otters scored the first goaf of the second period to pad their margin to 31 before jarred seymour scored his first goal as a rhember of the spirit to cut their deficit to a goal but the otters scored two more times to take a 52 lead enteringthe final frame exotter donivan munro scored a powerplay goal to narrow the deficit to 53 before the otters rounded out the scoring german tsatsura made his debut in net for the spirit the otters outshot the spirit 3 130 travelling to mis- sissauga sunday to take part in the leagues annual governors showcase weekend at erin mills twin rinks before a large gathering of us and canadian university coaches the spirit battled the georgetown raiders in a nip-and- tuck battle before succumbing 6- 5 in overtime nursing a 42 lead entering the third the spirit were outscored 31 in the final 20 min utes that included justin laces gametying marter with 15 sec onds remaining in regulation time to force overtime in the extra ses sion the raiders mark mcgowan scored a powerplay goal at the 206mark to give georgetown the victory randy appreciation night generally speaking weve got to learn how to close out games a little better dammizio said of his clubs fate against the raiders we had a twogoal lead with five minutes left and we made some errors on the ice and penalties hurt as well hopefully that experience was enough for us to learn from dammizio felt the effort in last thursdays heartbreaking 54 shootout loss to the defending rbc cup champion aurora tigers took itstoll we put a lot of energy put into our game with aurora and the game went late having that late night and a bus ride to huntsville we werent mentally prepared despite the heartbreaking set backs dammizio feels his club can compete the last few games have been an early measure on how we com pare to the top teams in our divi sion i think were right
