for increased program support space and storage councillor suzanne hilton is on the committee that has met with the stakeholders we wanted to be sure people had input into what we were proposing mrs hilton said and they did i mrs hilton called it the most professional committee shes ever worked on all council members praised town staff and the consultants for the work they have put into the project the building will have a bal cony in front a large lobby and gallery space a multiuse great hall a backofhouse area and a small secondfloor meeting room bricked up windows and doors will be opened up an elevator and accessible washrooms are in the plans the audience was surprising ly small for the meeting consid ering that concerned residents often filled the council chambers to overflowing when the centre was on the agenda at council one worry expressed was whether construction would be seamless i am concerned council the old town hall in stouffville will be transformed into an arts centre during the next year at a coslof 28 million has overestimated the ease with which government funding and community fundraising will hap pen joarma french a neigh bour to the old town hall said financing is to include half from the town 34 per cent from fundraising and 16 per cent from grants another neighbour alison peck and ms french also asked about the possibility of light and noise spilling over into their properties the acoustics of the building are designed to keep sound in and there would be lowlevel lighting for the out side of the building consultant charles hazell said the building could also be used for business luncheons art and other classes meetings corporate functions and other events i think once it is done some of the groups will look at it again mrs hilton said in a survey by the novita group presented to whitchurch- stouffville council in febru ary a number of local organi zations indicated they might use the arts and culture centre of the 41 groups contacted around 16 indicated interest in using the building at council mayor wayne emmerson noted hed like more usable space on the secondfloor mezzanine to accommodate some artists the town will also be looking at attracting new events to the downtown area such as busker festivals art in the park agricul tural and fall fairs and fiddle and step dance festivals the civic square in front of the building will likely be com pleted next summer as well the first goahead for an arts and culture centre was given last june by the previous council when sue sherban was mayor she was a strong proponent for a fullsize theatre in the building for many years and had vowed to get a decision on the building before her term of office was over s i i stouffville pentecostal church 6853 main street
