whitchurch- stouffville town crier marcel bossi has uttered thousands of times during the past 16 years thank mr bossi 56 and markham crier john webster for crying out loud john described the duties i met some other town criers and we approached the council in stouffville about having our own town crier mr bossi said a competition was scheduled to encourage local residents to try out for the position but every other competitor dropped out leaving mr bossi with the job i personally warm up in pavarottis favourite warmup studio the shower as the hot steamy environment lubricates the voice beautifully mr bossi is also the town crier for the village of swansea in toronto where he now lives by day hes a senior business analyst with scotia insurance in toronto the first documented town criers date back to the norman invasion of england in 1066 their duties were to provide news to people in villages who were illiterate today although the practice of town crying is much less pop ular their purpose is still similar besides providing colour and greetings at events and making proclamations mr bossi takes part in competitions around the world faces places in a busy year i could go to a town crying competition every weekend from may to august even the end of september he said local competitions are held all over the place although he enjoys compet ing it doesnt come without a cost the town does not provide funding for competitions if im going to an interna tional competition im out 3000 from my own pocket he said despite the cost he says he enjoys his job and doesnt plan on stopping soon i love the opportunity to pro mote and travel with my friends he said there are about 750 of us globally and it gives me an excuse to travel i have friends everywhere mr bossi lived in stouffville for 18 years he returns on a reg ular basis to visit and participate in events the best part about his job is being able to give back to a com munity he loves he said i raised my son here he said doing this gives me an opportunity to promote stouf fville wherever i go i think its a great town and yes he has lost his voice more than id like to remem ber he said laryngitis is an occupational hazard for all town criers as creating intelligible speech at 100 or so decibels can be tough on the old vocal chords this effect can also be exacerbated by cold alcohol or anything else which tends to dry out the throat a workout helps of course if one does not regularly exercise or warm up whitchurchstouffville news digest marcel bossi is the official town crier of
