his wife glenda almost 35 years ago at age 74 he shows no signs of slowing down his philosophy is if he doesnt keep on going hell seize up however there seems to be little danger of that during the winter hes either at the curling rink or kneedeep in toys and gifts the toys are collected and sorted before christmas each year by members of the stouffville lions club to be distributed to underprivileged children mr dunkeld has been a lion for eight years his most recent volunteer endeavour is at the care and share thrift store on main street he began helping at the shop after coming by regu larly to pick up mrs dunkeld who volunteers there when their six children were tykes all of them played softball and almost all played hockey so it was natural for mr dunkeld to get involved he coached the peewee junior and interme diate boys ball teams and in 1970 began coach ing girls softball a commitment that would last 20 years difference he has been an umpire for 30 years he coached ladies softball at seneca college he has been on the executive of the whitchurchstoufiville softball association and the provincial womens softball association as well as serving as convener and auditor of the ontario amateur softball association mr dunkeld received the e r feaver memor ial trophy in 2005 for his work with softball across ontario the dunkeld girls interest in hockey eventu ally led to mr dunkeld starting the whitchurch- stouffville girls hockey association in 1974 he remained on the executive until 1998 for most of his working life mr dunkeld was in the financial department for durham region with responsibility for sewers and roads this background stood him in good stead when he became a town councillor he served 12 years on whitchurchstouffville council and never missed a meeting he said he feels his greatest contribution in the polit ical realm is the construction of the pool and library building during his years in office he was on the board of markham stouffville hospital for 10 years in 1998 mr dunkeld was awarded the cana da olympic medal for volunteer work in 2002 he received the queens golden jubilee medal sportsperson 02006has the spirit by has been since day 1 mr mason said he genuinely cares about everyone involved and goes out of his way to help all this couldnt happen to a better person mr madigan and his wife sandy moved to the area 27 years ago mrs madigan died july 7 2005 an evening in their honour was held earlier in the year at a soldout rolling hills golf club mr madigans life has revolved around sports almost as long as he can remember as a teenager he played baseball rugby football and hockey every wak ing moment he was also a keen gym nast and wrestler he had wanted to play hockey beyond the midget ranks but coaches felt he was too small during the spirits first year of opera tion former general manager wally crowder asked madigan to help out as equipment manager he agreed and later became vicepresident and presi dent after some time off mr madigan returned to the organization to become an assistant coach the team won its first north conference and northwest championships in 2006 he also referees with the stouffville amateur hockey league where he once served as player president and vice- president mr madigan has three daughters mishelle hayley and kelsey pat madigan sports person of the year has been
