stouffvihesuntribunem thursday sept 14 20065 murrays hobby hit with art lovers b eauts in the eye of the beholder artistically speaking i was the beholder of beauty in its finest form during a recent visit to the home of murray and isobel pipher in markham and while i dont pretend to be a connoisseur of aes thetic skill i know what i like and i like what i know murrays work without doubt is so magnificent at any moment subjects it seems could emerge from their frames and interact with reality indeed if such a descrip tive is practical theyre as authentic as life added to the incredible deftness of murrays hand- eye coordination is the fact he considers his newfound venture only a hobby a form of relaxation following retire ment from a successful career in advertising design he established his own business gristmill marketing at dicksons hill now operat ed by sons rod and doug born at lemonville the son of walter and rae pipher murray lived for a short time at dicksons hill before mov ing to stouffville where he received his formal education at summitview school murray recalls applying his inborn artistic skills as a member of the high school yearbook staff but even a twoyear stint at the ontario college of art in toronto failed to awaken current expressions of brilliance his work exquisitely shows murray readily admits he once found it difficult to attach a price to his paintings i hadnt a clue what peo ple would be willing to pay he says then one year he placed a number of entries in markham fair and to his sur prise won several prizes i couldnt believe the interest he said people wanted to buy them from the walls he now enters up to six shows annually in addition to markham fair these include the waterfront art festival in cobourg markhams art in the park the mckay art cen tre unionville the markhamhwy 48 studio tour and port perrys show case of the arts murrays favourite sub jects are heritage themes local landmarks and rural scenes i try and paint what i like and what i think people will want he says plowing matches harvest bees and heavy horses pulling farm implements are ideal subjects but he doesnt stop there steam engines classic cars flowers and birds all com mand his attention so do buildings including central united church the queens hotel and veterans roaming with jim thomas memorial hall in unionville altona mennonite church box grove united church cedar grove school and peachs united church trees also hold a particular interest he finds these in abundance around the family cottage near bancroft titles include autumn maple october maple winter maple andwinter wonderland he has the ability to turn simple scenes into priceless masterpieces but theyre not too price less to purchase most sell for around 250 plus frames the highest taken of a location on the british columbia coast sold for 900 to accomplish these feats of skill murray travels throughout the countryside with a canon digital camera slung over one shoulder if something catches his atten tion he snaps a photograph then duplicates it on canvas i appreciate detail says murray but nature doesnt always cooperate so photo graphs are a help so far murray has sold more than 250 paintings many finding homes in markham- unionville and whitchurchstouffville particularly satisfying was one commissioned by esther lewis for the reesor reunion it depicted several gonestoga wagons crossing a stream headed for ontario from pennsylvania the buyer was murray reesor of cedar grove- in addition the reunion committee ordered 100 numbered prints all sold within minutes half the enjoyment for me is having people enjoy what they see murray says some of his paintings have travelled great distances including one ordered by the town of markham and pre sented to a twincity nordlingen germany it currently holds a place of prominence in the nordlingen city hall i paint for pleasure says murray i want to share my passion for the beauty and rich heritage of our commu nity this he does every day jim thomas is a stouf- fville resident who has writ ten for area newspapers for more than 50 years ocrs hit am n as promised well have quantities of
