recreational fires on april 18th 2006 a new open air burning bylaw was passed by council which will allow residents to have two types of fires depending on their address and each fire has their own page primary purpose of an openadr burn permit to allow you to have a fire on your property in order to clean up excess yard waste such as dry brush wood products and nat ural organic material in order to qualify for an open- air burn permit we must con firm that your property is not within restricted areas being those areas currently developed within the stouffville settle ment area if you meet the first requirement your property must also be a minimum of 1 acre in size to qualify for the permit in order to purchase the permit you must be the property owner and if you are not you must provide our office with a let ter of permission from the property owner an inspection of the property will be made by our firefighters and a permit fee of 2500 plus gst must be paid prior to the permit being issued primary purpose of a recreational fire to permit the burning of clean wood products for cooking heating enjoyment religious ceremony or similar purposes see guidelines below for details permits are not required for recreational fires but the follow ing conditions must be complied with fires must not exceed 75m in diameter or 75m in height and must be contained to prevent the spread of fire only clean wood products may be burned petroleum products plastics rubber painted lumber domestic industrial agricultural waste or any other material that will cause excessive smoke or noxious fumes must not be mixed with orcontaminate the wood that may be burned recreational fires must be supervised by a competent person at all times until they are completely extinguished there must be present and in close proximity adequate means to extinguish the fire a minimum distance of 3m to combustible materials must be maintained at all times recreational fires shall not be permitted when the wind speed exceeds 20kph when the wind direction is changing frequently or when there is decreased visibility on any highway in the vicinity recreational fires shall be prohibited when an open air burning ban has been declared by the fire chief recreational fires are prohibited during construction within any subdivision or on any construction site with in the town outdoor fireplaces must be equipped with screens on the flue and fuel loading area the use of outdoor fireplaces must comply with the manufactures guidelines in the event that there are no manufactures guidelines for the outdoor fireplace only approved material may be burned a minimum three meter 3m clearance must be maintained between the fireplace and combustible objects outdoor fireplaces must be installed on a non- combustible surface recreational fires that emit excessive amounts of smoke or sparks or create a nuisance are not permitted and must be extinguished the fire chief may at any time require that a recreational fire be extinguished the resident or occupant of any land on which a recreational fire is occurring must ensure that officers have full access to the said land at all times during the recreational fire for the support of mayors earth
