seniors centre i like pool euchre and other card games and might go if a new centre were built marion scon i have never been to the silver jubilee club because i have plenty of things to do already the churches in stouffville are very good to seniors with their programs and there is the library and swimming pool mary calbert they need to have more afternoon activi ties rather than always having as a product of your environ ment it makes sense that you spend most of your waking hours in places and spaces pro moting a healthy lifestyle summitview public school in stouffville has taken that approach to jieart and beyond summitview one of 47 out of 300 schools in york region participating in the healthy schools health kids program reaffirmed its commitment to nutrition and exercise with the unveiling monday of the win ning student logo and slogan the cocreation of grade 8 students jessica stallan and sarah may an apple orange and honey bee carrying a banner emblazoned with healthy schools are cool was deemed the winning entry by a student vote the colourful logo will be painted as a wall mural and reprinted on hats and tshirts summitview healthy schools committee chairperson cindy white said we also plan to have it print ed up as stickers so teachers can use them as rewards instead of treats she said adding once students collect 10 stickers they can be redeemed for passes at local pools and skating rinks the contest brands a con certed campaign by the com mittee to ensure the schools 400 students not only participate in physical activity and nutritional eating but come to appreciate a healthy lifestyle the committee comprising teachers parents students citi zens and health professionals has formed partnerships with community organizations and businesses policing is not the issue for us its awareness and education york region health services and the lebovic leisure centre in stouffville are on board to help develop a healthy schools action plan local grocers ap and sobeys provided fruits and veg etables for the celebratory assembly complete with student and staff skits drumming and a visit by munchwell a giant car rot mascot and healthy eating ambassador the program began when school officials recognized a dis turbing provincial trend in their own backyard ms white said in our school as well kids were being rewarded with treats she said candy was a reward and junk food was part of fund raising with no cafete ria we saw what kids were bringing for lunch healthy eat ing was an issue policing is not the issue for us its awareness and education the school connected with york region health services public health nutritionist lucy valleau endorses the pro gram a new initiative by the region the collaborative effort between health services school services teams and the commu nity hopes to inspire active healthy living for children she said the goal is to ensure school practices are consistent with healthy early education ms valleau said its critical to examine the whole not just packing healthy lunches with the logo and slogan in place the school will focus on an action plan as part of the two year pilot project school staff have been pro vided with
