resident heather markoff found she had some free time on her hands a year ago she decided to do something about it she headed straight to big brothers big sisters of york and volunteered for the inschool mentoring program spending an hour a week at the school with 12yearold kaitlyn ms markoff 27 found she was making a difference it worked out so well ms markoff has since taken on a bigger commitment by joining the oneonone program the change means kaitlyn and ms markoff spend three to four hours a week together and have gone to niovies and paramount canadas wonderland big brothers big sisters of york tries to forge such relationships daily but it needs volunteers to do so right now 53 children are waiting for a big sister or big brother of that number 46 are boys volunteers are needed all over york region but particularly in georgina and newmarket caseworker leanne parsons said but even with the waiting list the program is offering more activities so it is searching for more little brothers and sisters the organization does more than help children who dont have a father or mother executive director moragh wolfe said whether it is a parent who is too ill to take their child to certain places or a sin gle mother who might be trying to jug gle working and spending time with her children big brothers and sisters can help ms wolfe said you wouldnt think it would make much of a difference but it has a big impact on a childs life ms wolfe said immigrants can find canadian role models for their daughters through the agency although girls can get big sisters even if their mothers are still in the pic ture because of a shortage of male vol unteers boys cant be matched if a father figure is present with countless tales of children who benefit from the various programs the organization offers ms parsons said one stands out three years ago a seven-year- old boy found his way to big brothers big sisters and according to his teachers he never smiled walked down the hallways with his head down and had a hard time making friends within a month of being paired up through the inschool mentoring pro gram his demeanor had changed irs just unbelievable theyre
