stouffville suntribune thursday aug 18 2005 5 artists conception of splashpad set to open in south stoufifville next summer splish splash water parks coming to town racers project erase officers hit the roads aug 13 and 14 in an attempt to put an end to street racing police estimate there are more than 20000 modified vehicles in the local streetracing scene erase is an initiative to eliminate deaths and serious crashes often occurring as the result of racing over the two days a total of 447 vehicles were stopped and 285 tick ets issued of those 107 people were charged with speeding and 27 with offences under the environmental protection act another 16 drivers were charged under the compulsory automobile insurance act and 47 charges were laid in relation to equipment offences seven vehicles were pulled off the road in one incident a driver was stopped and charged when he tried to get home faster by using the alternating strobe lights installed in his headlights appearing as though he was operating a police or emer- gency vehicle martin derbyshire by hannelore volpe staff writer stouffvilles first mini- waterpark should be ready for youngsters playing in byers pond way park next summer the splashpad as its called in the newlyredevel oped byers pond way park on hoover park drive will feature giant hoops that squirt water onto youngsters running under them and ele phant headshaped nozzles to use for water fights there will be ground gey sers and gushers and a silver trio vertical pole with three shorter horizontal poles to spray out water among oth ers there are currently less than a handful of these splashpads in york region but they may well be the wave of the future with denser residential development the neighbourhood park is going to have a significant impact on the community we are implementing them in our new park pro gram tom graham direc tor of the department of leisure services said he noted that with denser residential development the neighbourhood park is going to have a significant impact oh the community cars however wont be welcome neighbourhood parks are located within a sevenminute walk of local residents a splashpad is also planned for the mattamy homes development south of sobeys grocery store a spring completion date is anticipated the byers pond way park splashpad will be on a kid neyshaped concrete pad whose level surface means there will be no standing water it will be accessible for people of all ages and physi cal abilities a motionactivated con trol panel allows water to be turned on when needed councillor rob hargrave believes the new park devel opment is important for this central part of town there will be an ice pad in the win ter he said and a basketball court in the summer everyone will be able to take advantage of it he said noting that many young families will be moving into this area over the next few years splashpads began to gain popularity almost five years ago while the city of toronto has 35 aurora has one and richmond hill has two the splashpad will be integrated with new play ground equipment to be erected in the park and will be visible from hoover park drive for added safety there will be junior and intermediate play struc tures along with benches and other sitting areas the park will have a network of trails and three lookout areas people will also have grassy areas in the park to play pickup ball and soccer games as well as areas for basketball and ball hockey the price of the splash pad in byers pond way park is around 125000 its design means operating costs can be kept at a mini mum tenders for constructing the park will be considered at tuesdays whitchurch- stouffville council meeting
