stouffville suntribune thursday june 162005 23 pririce edward the youngest child of queen elizabeth u arid prince philip honoured aa young people from markham and stouffville at a duke of edinburgh awards ceremony last week in peterborough the markham and whit churchstouffville youths joined 105 others from across canada to receive gold awards of achievement from the earl of wessex as part of the duke of edinburgh award receives ceremony- courtney kroen was the lone whitchurchstouffville resident to receive an award the duke of edinburghs award i young canadian challenge is an individual achievement program encouraging young people develop a sense of responsi bility to themselves and their community the program has been in canada since 1963 more than 350000 young people have prince participated the award was founded by prince philip to encourage personal development and involvement award recipients from markham unionville and thornhill include king chan danielle koehn joanne lau martin leung jonathan liu garenee mahseredjian vin cent mok avni bhart richard caccamo kurt whittaker jane church jeffrey church and barbara suen from thin air pictures mayor sherbans foundation presents in cooperation with the mayors youth council heritage honours for 15 yearold whitchurchstouffville resi dent jennifer carroll received the young heritage leader award from mayor sue sherban at last weeks council meeting the award from the ontario heritage foundation acknowledges young people under the age of 18 for their heritage conservation efforts the 15yearold has been involved in environmental endeavours since age seven she has worked alongside her dad environmentalist and for mer whitchurchstouffville councillor mark carroll last year ms carroll helped construct a water quality con trol trench along the eastern shore of musselmans lake as our town with hannelore volpe a member of the toronto zoos ontario frog watch program she monitors frog populations around musselmans lake and teaches younger children the calls of frogs during spring mating season loves animals early in 2003 she took part in a reforestation and wildlife habitat enhancement project on the property of the ontario society for the prevention of cruelty to animals along with students from ballantrae public school more than 1000 trees and shrubs were planted and close to l000raised that summer she worked with the ministry of natural resources stewardship ran gers to help create trails trans- plant native trees to trie ospca property and help build habitats for snakes bats birds and butterflies at home she cares for 13 ani mals including rats chinchillas guinea pigs and squirrels the ontario heritage foundation has been promot ing awareness of the impor tance of heritage conservation and protecting threatened and neglected heritage for the past 30 years ihwlemorial park whitchurchstouffville still retains that charm of a small town even though it is a part of the gta greater toronto area ft continues to embrace events like the annual strawberry festival to promote itself as a great place to live and do business and now another set of events have been added to summer in order to keep that friendly feeling alive all summer long from thin air pictures operates the countys only inflatable movie screen standing 24 feet high and 30 feet wide it is aspectacle unto itself add a great line up of family movies and you have the makings of a night out the family will be eager to take part in starting june 24th and then on july 22nd and the final night on august 19th residents and visitors will be excited by the driveinblock party feeling of the outdqor cinema now playing june 24 july 22 august 19 the rookie the wedding shrek planner fun j starting at dusk bring a blanket omn chair c rain dates rescheduled f flrcc contact 9056401 91 0 x230 ww refreshments availabter come see the in qur parts today only allwheel drive wwwmarkhamsubarucom markham subaru 9401 ftighy and the new tribeca is here n sb jk r t jjjj a v 1 w r hi mm mmm
