stouffville suntribune b thursday may 19 2005 7 100 years of memories the queen of buckingham manor is readying for her coronation on may 28 alice reesor a resident a resi dent of stouffville for five years will celebrate her 100th birthday an open house is planned from 2 to 4 pm mrs reesor the former alice shadlock was born on a farm near steeles and middlefield road in scarbor ough one of nine children to david and ida shadlock she vividly recalls how steeles avenue was often blocked with snow forcing her to jump fences en route to a oneroom school on whats now 14th avenue one teacher taught 30 students in eight grades weather was never a deterrent to attending sunday school and worship at ebenezer church in the winter they travelled by horse and cutter in the summer by horse and buggy heated bricks kept tiny feet warm the trek was made faster and easier when mr shadlock purchased his first car the annual school christmas concert was an important community event remembers alice because the site lacked electricity gatherings were held during the day santa claus would always arrive giving each child an orange life was simpler back then says alice land in front of the shadlock house was flat making it ideal for skat ing many funfilled hours were spent there indoor games such as lost heir and crokinole were pop ular euchre wasnt allowed my parents were methodist alice said it was a love of skating that brought alice shadlock and allan reesor together they met at the old markham arena on hwy 7 and later in 1929 were married rev john ferguson of unionville tied the knot for their honey moon they took a train trip from torontos union station to woodstock where they spent a week with an aunt and uncle at springford a nearby town on their return they took up residence at the reesor family farm on beare road they remained there 43 years then moved to markham in 1973 while on the farm they attended zion united church near cedar grove then st andrews united church in markham and more recendy st james presbyterian church in stouffville alice was never afraid to pitch in and help with farm chores including milking there were no machines to do it back then she said withasmile the reesors kept a flock ot 500 laying hens it was alices job to gather eggs as many as roaming around with jim thomas 100 dozen a week they took them to market along with honey and aprons expertly made by alice there they also sold cidei piessed from their own apples at lapps mill on reesor road for about 40 year they made the market trips alice remembers her hus bands love of horses in par ticular a grey team of percherons the arrival of art snowball driving a big tractor and hauling a threshing machine was a momentous community event with neigh bours pitching in to help they also worked up big appetites son ivan recalls but alice was always equal to the task when it came to preparing meals allan and alice enjoyed trips to germany austria hawaii and switzerland alice speaks with pride of her family sons lome in vancouver and ivan in markham a daughter ila mrs scotty crichton resides at peterborough a sis ter winnie durant lives in sudbury there are seven grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren with the exception of dou ble knee surgery alice has enjoyed excellent health she still does a lot of handiwork loves reading and watching tv she attributes her long life to heredity gods been good to me she said we knew hard work when there was a job to do we did it alice is unabashed in her praise of the staff at buckingham manor ive no complaints she said no complaints at all she misses friends dorothy wicks and peggy conlin when alice strolls from her third floor apartment to the dining room she uses an heirloom cane a hand-me- down support from
