22 economist siinsuntribune sports saturday april 23 2005 canadians making grade in us college baseball by john cudmore staff writer there is no tried and true path to the big leagues in fact for the 750 players in the world talented enough to hold down jobs in major league baseball there is a story for each increasingly those stories are being told by canadians opening day rosters for major league teams earlier this month included more canadians 17 than ever it remains a small per centage but one that figures to grow considering the increasing number of cana dians playing college baseball in the united states more than 600 canadians play baseball at schools south of the border obviously it bodes well for all canadian baseball players when a fellow such as peter orr of newmarket cracks a major league roster orr who is with the atlanta braves never quite got to the ncaa level after graduating from newmarket high school the 25yearold utility player for the braves chose to follow other canadi- aaron izaryk markham prod uct is catcher for the university of maine baseball team ans he knew including auro ra resident jeremy walker to galveston college a junior recalled on who was born in richmond hill i started to think about my goals when i was younger to play professional baseball or go to nebraska but until this past year i never thought id be in the big leagues it just sort of worked out that way orrs success along with york region players strive for the showpage 23 that of other young canadi ans may convince others there is always a chance its a great impact to have a kid make it to the opening day lineup said longtime newmarket baseball associa tion official don mckhight they are few and far between but maybe one kid sees that and thinks he can do it too some in the industry are seeing a trend toward choosing baseball as a seri ous channel kids are making the deci sion to play and they go from tliere said brian bates who operates duel sports which specializes in baseball and softball training in concord its amazing but i think these kids want to learn and go to elite schools thats no surprise to cana dian national team assistant coach rick johnston who owns the baseball zone a baseball training facility in mississauga i dont know if its a later surge or if kids are refocusing or rechannelling from hockey but they are getting so many opportunities in the us said johnston a former resi dent of newmarket and stouffville canadian players are getting bigger and stronger and are such good athletes maybe because they play a sport like hockey when they are younger the odds for any player even at the ncaa level to make the major leagues are astronomical considering more than 900 american postsecondary schools pro vide varsity baseball thats a lot of backs to scale then mere are six levels of minor professional leagues with 164 minor league teams from the minor leagues only about 5 per cent make the big leagues when you get into the c0ryturchan stouffville resi dent is a senior at spalding uni versity in louisville ky minor leagues its a huge real ity check about how things work said orr who spent five seasons moving up the braves organizational ladder you realize its a huge busi ness and say oh boy orrs ability to play at several positions supports the notion that a jack-of- alltrades is a valued com modity he is very gifted said johnston he has the uncanny ability to play any position due to his athletic ability and impeccable work ethic thats what separates him from others johnstons position with team canada places him in the same dugout with up- andcoming elite canadian talent yet hes unable to offer insight to which if any player has an inside track to the majors theres lots of guys but i cant pinpoint one guy as the next one to make it perhaps thats because aside from all the obvious rea sons there is the random fac tor which applies to success in any sport right place right time and having the right pair of eyes happen to notice but it helps to be prepared if opportunity knocks they work hard it doesnt come easy bates said but i believe with all the different alternate teams around they are getting more expo sure it helps immensely and the more exposure you can get the better we have to help our kids more and use tire resources we have pflfimegiott the regional
