stouffville suntribune b thursday april 14 2005 2 its not ok to dupe volunteers town council we were duped members of the clock tower theatre association including me and 100plus supporters attending a council meeting april 5 were hopeful maybe just maybe this longawait ed muchanticipated proj ect would win approval it wasnt to be truth is it was never to be we all know this now the irritating burr under several politicians saddles was irrev erently beaten into oblivion since 1995 a proposal that would have converted the old town hall into a the atre for performing arts has been the subject of hollow promises and susceptible pledges when the fat finally hit the fire last week a decade of dreams went up in smoke what i find so irritating is not what happened but how it happened instead of say ing no to the venture months ago politicians dangled car rots in front of supporters providing false hopes the project might somehow come to pass it didnt and it wont to add insult to injury an architect was commissioned to prepare reports and draw ings costing upwards of 28000 all money down the drain this i would add did not include the 10000 paid earlier to the same firm by the theatre association what a waste despite scathing criti cisms heaped on paul sapounzi of the ventin group and roger jones of roger jones and associates i thought these firms did amazing jobs far beyond what most had expected they were made scapegoats subjects of reprimands they didnt deserve but why i ask was the issue placed before the pub lic in the first place after councillor rob hargrave had his positive say it became apparent to all and sundry the decision was a foregone conclusion it was a definite no from ken ferdinands phil bannon clyde smith susanne hilton and harry bowes was the end result known before council entered the chambers was the final deci sion made behind closed doors the ashen facade that was mayor sue sherbans face told the truth but that wasnt enough she wanted everyone to hear it for them selves and they did loudly and clearly mr hargrave was frustrat ed but thats ok hes paid to know frustration mrs sherban was angry but thafs ok shes paid to ik m roaming around with jim thomas feel anger architect paul sapounzi was disillusioned but thats ok hes paid to be disillu sioned consultant roger jones was disheartened but thats ok hes paid to be disheart ened what of the association individuals who have toiled and wrestled with this delu sion during the past 10 years its not okay theyre vol unteers what of the york durham association for the performing arts instructors parents and children forced to drive 30 miles to a suitable site its not ok theyre vol unteers what of project support ers who hurried home from work to attend a meeting the result of which was known before it began thats not ok theyre vol unteers 1 what of association mem bers who paid their dues and supported fundraisers to pad the organizations bank account its not ok theyre volunteers who gave a whit about them only two the mayor and mr hargrave the conclusion was a scene unlike anything yet witnessed in a voice breaking with exasperation mrs sherban admonished project oppo nents calling them weak they the council requested information they received it but they didnt accept it she reproved its really sad i dont know how to start the process again you had better find a private fun- der certainly you cant depend on people on this side of the desk to do it mr hargrave recom mended the issue be placed before the people with a plebiscite his suggestion received no seconder mrs hilton moved a report be prepared suggest ing alternate uses for the site that motion lived the theatre died jim thomas is a stoumie resi dent who has written for area news papers for
