investigation into the 2000 drowning of markhams anja broadfoot got under way friday shes been gone five years now and were happy we might finally start to get some answers the victims daughter taina andrews said this is the first time were not hitting a brick wall mrs broadfoots body was found face down in a pool of mud and water a few metres from a shallow stream in markhams milne park just hours after she had been reported missing march 1 2000 her husband told york regional police she was mentally ill and suicidal but her daughters insist she was mur dered unable to determine why or how she drowned investigators closed the case however mrs broadfoots daughters complained police botched the investi gation by treating her death as a suicide even though she was found near the bank of a stream and not in it york regional police policy is to treat all suspicious deaths as homicides first although internal and independent police investigations into det jim kill- bys work in the case determined no wrongdoing the ontario civilian com mission on police service ordered a neg lect of duty hearing det killby is charged with failing to adhere to police procedure because he was not alert to the possibility he was entering a crime scene failed to protect evidence from contamination and neg lected to complete a background check on everyone involved in the case det killby asked for more time to prepare before entering a plea prosecutor kimberly greenwood an inspector with the toronto police pro fessional standards bureau handed over 16 documents in a disclosure pack age to det killby and mrs broadfoots family many of which the family has never seen were very anxious to review them motorcyclist seriously hurt in crash with pickup truck a port perry man was seriously injured in a crash in markham wednes day just before 4 pm a 2004 gmc pick up truck was stopped facing east on elgin mills road at kennedy road the truck suddenly entered the inter section into the path of a northbound harleydavidson motorcycle the 59yearold rider from port perry hit the right side of the truck and was ejected he was taken by air ambulance to sunnybrook and womens college health sciences centre and was listed in critical condition the driver of the pickup was not hurt theres no word on charges as the investigation continues york regional police are looking for witnesses anyone with
