politicians failing environment markham take a bow york region municipalities other than markham are considering dump ing plans to increase waste diversion pro grams this year the reason is the almighty dollar its obviously not about being environmen tally responsible aurora is the latest municipality to defer implementation of the mission green program in which residents sepa rate kitchen and wet waste in green bins for composting whitchurchstouffville voted earlier this month to delay the program until 2007 saying it wanted to see how other municipalities made out with the pro gram first whitchurchstouffville may not have much of a chance to do that too many others are following its example only markham a selfproclaimed municipal leader on the environment is sticking to its guns it should be praised phase 2 of the threestream waste pro gram is slated to be rolled out to 55000 households west of hwy 48 this summer instead its being abandoned york had asked municipalities to implement the sourceseparated organ- ics program by july 2006 but aurora newmarket richmond hill and others have told the region they wont start the program this spring as expected the decision to delay the green box plan was a mutual one between local municipalities and the region york had to trim 20 million from its 2005 budget with kitchen trash recycling representing 2 million big deal yes the 78million cost for green bin processing and collection is about twice as much as landfill for now ontario municipalities received a scare earlier this month when michigan announced a plan to increase dumping fees to 35 times the present costs turns out it didnt affect the dumps our towns and cities use but its certainly a state ment of intent michigan wants to make shipping our waste over the border con siderably more expensive but this isnt about voting from the pocketbook this is about setting an example for the regions residents and the rest of the country its about doing the right thing for the future once again a majority of york politi cians are reluctant to be leaders choos ing instead to be sheeplike followers they should bite the bullet and pay the bill in the long run it will be easier and cheaper being green more than 2000 trees too closetd wires must be removed letters to the editor build new stouffville theatre use town hall for market crafts re smaller theatre would cost 4m feb 1 7 the suntribune chose an excellent image of the town hall heatre project presented by the ventin group architects the picture on the front page is classic barn and utility shed format silk purse out of a sows ear comes to mind i think the ventin group is doing as best it can given the mandate by a narrowminded council anxious to spend 28000 to find out how to spend 4 millionplus councillor harry bowes was berated for being negative because he presented the facts he has done his homework on this project and rather than be negative has a positive solution ask him let the architects design a new building for the performing arts without tying their hands in the old town hall he was prepared at the feb 10 meeting but no one was interested rather singleminded by your staff writer hannelore volpe saying he was concerned about parking i agree the building as it stands and if was gutted would be excellent for theatre sound i also agree a new structure could be built to per form as well or better the 850k earmarked for gutting the build ing would go a long way towards financing a new structure a new building that would show the character of todays town and character of the old build ing at 19 civic ave as it is and how it was built leave it to the artisans and a central market place for the town build a new structure at a new location near by just ask harry how many businessmen in town remember how cranky they were because all the traffic was passing through town to stouffville country market i remember a letter to the editor suggesting the business community come up with an idea to capture the interest of all these transients like it or not the town has been known for flea marketsales barn activities for many years now is the time to keep a little of the old by cre ating a market square keep the old building the town hall as it is and encourage arts and crafts inside and include a weekly market outside let the architects design a new building for the performing arts without tying their hands in the old building no one is negative about the project some are just concerned about spending 4 million- plus on a rectangular box of brick gussied up to make it work bob lewis stouffville editorial production managing director new editorial editor manager business flyer sales 9056402612 jim mason pain nichols dawna andrews
