bob dean editorial time for region to implement userfee trash plan so greater toronto area mayors think they have a homegrown option when its time to put the trash out eh southgate township near shelburne says it is interested in taking garbage from toronto and surrounding areas or at least southgate mayor don lewis is saying the economic devastation in rural communities such as his has forced him to look at economic advan tages of taking the areas garbage how serious is southgate you ask very the mayor insists the municipality was turned down when it requested approval for an inciner ator to burn torontos trash southgate politicians have toured the michigan facilities that now take gta trash and approve of what they saw garbage as a business opportunity interesting in the late 1990s there was little if any interest economic or otherwise from communities in york region and beyond nominated as potential hosts for toronto and gta garbage under bob raes ndp regime residents of vaughan couldnt have their keele valley landfill site closed soon enough now a smalltown mayor wants to take our garbage ifs a nice thought but its not likely to happen the southgate proposal will probably be doomed like the adams mine proposal from kirkland lake where the plan of some local politicians lost out to strong public opposition and what would a landfill site in our own back yard mean to york residents they might see evidence of a massive dump on their way to the cottage or ski hills but it wont likely be enough to dis suade residents from putting mat extra bag of garbage at the curb york region needs to severely cut back on its garbage consumption the region sends close to 200000 tonnes of waste to landfill each year almost 1000 tonnes a day four days a week to michigan at a cost of about 50000 a day with york regions population grow ing at about 6000 houses a year and with more than 852000 people the seventh largest in canada york could bring in more than 12 million a year with a regionwide userpay trash plan were still a long way from the provinces target of diverting 60 per cent of waste from landfills by 2008 and the clock is ticking answer hit people in the pocket book ip the christmas cards- 0hthef re still hiding tree needles f burned out bulbs and bits and pieces of toys and dust letters to the editor we all should help victims after returning from vacation i was pleasantly surprised to hear the canadian government is will ing to provide 80 million in relief aid in the areas hit by the tsunami after seeing pictures of rundown structures orphaned children and dead corpses piled in heaps it was good to hear our country is willing to contribute quite a bit while the government has fortunately given a pretty good response we much each ask ourselves how we are helping on an individual basis after seeing great donations coming from vari ous persons organizations and countries should nt we feel we have not done enough until we our selves give a bit from our own pockets after all it is the responsibility of each of us for tunate canadians to help in some way or another sacrificing a couple of restaurant meals or the designer shirt that has caught your eye can help to bring joy to many distraught souls i commend the efforts of all the organizations and individuals who have already donated their time expertise and wealth towards the relief reha bilitation and rebuilding efforts for the tsunami victims our salute for all of you nadiawarsi press club of islamic foundation school markham movie should have told truth rating oliver stones alexander the great from one lowest to five highest i would give it a two first of all alexander was macedonian he first united greece both militarily and politically and a territory and groups of people you are not considered one of them therefore alexander cannot be egyptian persian or greek alexander is and could only be macedonian so one cannot call him greek oliver stone should have stuck to the truth if he wanted his film to be a success he angered the greeks because he sometimes referred to alexander as being macedonian and he angered the macedonians because he sometimes referred to alexander as being greek to the rest of the nonmacedonian and non- greek audience oliver stone just basically con fused everyone by not telling the truth why does oliver stone even talk about greece or greeks when at alexanders time there was no greece those people were athenian spartan etc furthermore alexander was not gay there is no record of this or of anything to support this oliver stone must have some personal reasons as to why he emphasized and sensationalized homosexuali ty so much throughout this particular movie oliver stone should have told the truth and only then he would have made a successful movie for whatever reasons he really didnt make anyone appreciate his efforts steve pliakes whitchurchstouffville editorial editor jim mason too much the death toll would rise into six figures and continue to balloon i was reading the paper and thought this event was the worst tragedy we could ever know the 15- year resident of stouffville said i could just send something but that seemed so petty and if im think ing this everyone else must be too so she phoned mayor sue sherban and suggested a townrun fund be established to give whitchurch- stouffville residents a local avenue to donate money for the south asian recovery the mayor agreed and an account was established at cibc with little fanfare money is already coming in people want to gravitate toward something like this they want to feel part of a team at a time like this mrs post said thats what its all about john pollard knows the feeling the stouffville real estate agent is used to flipping flapjacks and selling banquet tickets for the local rotary club now hes selling his community on the benefits of donating to help tsunami survivors rotarians will buy kits to help survivors rebuild down on main street at the earl of whitchurch pub chef sammy shamaghthangth knows all too well the pain inflicted by the boxing day disaster he lost 27 family members in sundays jam to the victims of the tsunami theyll ask for the donations to support world vision canadas disas ter relief at the event starting at 230 pm the earl is at 6204 main st the earl mrs post
