human tragedy on the scale of the tsunami catastro phe in southeast asia com prehending and coping can be difficult york region school boards have launched a myriad of studentcentred campaigns designed to aid victims and help children manage their feelings through direct involvement the york region district school board mobilized a dis aster assistance program days after the tsunami struck board director bill hogarth issued a staff memo randum encouraging teach ers to engage students emo tionally spiritually and intel lectually because students will want to understand what has happened in many differ ent ways mr hogarth urged staff to engage students in positive and constructive efforts to help alleviate the students sense of hopelessness and helplessness the student and staff pop ulation has taken the advice to task creating a groundswell of support for victims and ultimately themselves the york catholic district school board developed and delivered a 15page teacher resource guide on the crisis communications manager chris cable said its an extensive guide outlining recommendations for teachers staff and stu dents she said every school in our system received it and now many other schools are requesting it as well students at every school in the board are raising money for disaster relief with a friday deadline to be eligible for the governments matching funds
