churchs con gregation have paid off the first shovel should go into the ground this spring for the churchs 73000squarefoot extension and other renovations theres been a baptist church at the stouffville and kennedy roads site since 1848 the present building has had at least two additions in the late 1980s and the 1990s but the church is again bursting at the seams on an average sunday morn ing about 450 people come to worship and another 300 or so adults and children attend sunday school there is also a youth ministry with about 100 young people coming to the church thursdays for talent shows karaoke sports and guest speakers in addition to associate pastor bill thornton senior pastor bob flemming and youth minister jay sandiford there are three other ministers at the church to handle music the childrens ministry and counselling the church has been raising funds mainly through congrega tion members for almost four years for the project mr thornton noted with funds to cover about half of the expected 6 million cost in hand construc tion can begin when the project is finished in the fall of 2006 the church will have a double gymnasium class rooms a baseball and soccer field and a unfinished sanctuary seat ing 1100 another 1 million will have to be raised to finish the sanctuary the church owns its 15acre home a house has already been moved from the property and the parking lot must be moved before construction can start work on the parking lot will likely begin by years end the gymnasiums soccer and baseball fields and other facilities will be available
