high school students who might not normally get the opportunity to play golf out for an afternoon on the fairways staffsgt sheldon promoted the idea after attending a golf confer ence in the united states last november where he heard of a sim ilar program called first tee in the york region program offi cers take youngsters who are at risk to play nine holes one officer golfs with three youngsters and they walk the course and talk about whatever they want to and they enjoy the day he said working out of georgina last spring staffsgt sheldon went to area schools including keswick high school to see if there was interest great response the response staffsgt sheldon said was better than anticipated while the students were enthused with the idea so were the teachers and volunteers who were able to get golf courses to close for a couple of hours for the program transferred to markham in sep tember staffsgt sheldon wanted to expand the program and received cooperation from angus glen golf club we pride ourselves in being part of the community it makes a lot of sense for us to give back angus glen golf club vicepresi dent kevin thistle said locally markham district high school and stouffville district sec ondary school are taking part the principal or guidance counsellors selected 12 students from each school to take part its not the best golfers in the school staffsgt sheldon said its for which kids would benefit the most its a mentoring program where the youngsters see officers without their uniforms on this year angus glen donated three nights for the program staffsgt sheldon would like to see it expand across york region next year the sport of golf is a great way to spend time to bring up conversa tion and learn more about young sters staffsgt sheldon said
