stouffville suntribune thursday oct 14 2004 3 stouffville says by hannelore volpe what are your thoughts on food banks asked at no frills in stouffville tuesday evening brian carr food banks area good idea because peo ple are having tough times food banks have an advantage because people going to them can remain anonymous robert cilia i think food banks are still important forjhe less fortunate if everyone would help abit they would be more successful they should advertise more to get more donations deborah horner i definitely think they are here to stay rising costs these days and the cutbacks in social services make things tough for people dave horner they could eventually be eliminated with the proper funding of social services particularly for young people canada is such a rich coun try and yet we have 700000 homeless on a mission environmental activist and former whitchurch- stouffville councillor mark carroll wants to name this rill at hwys 48 and 47 miishiikenh creek after an ojibway word meaning turtle hes on a mission nam ing unnamed features like this stream hoping it will be harder to ignore these features as the land around stouffville is developed he gave the waterway its name after finding a big snapping turtle downstream staff photosjoerd witteveen names heip save streams by mike adler staff writer nothing helps the neigh bourhood creek like giving it a name say naturalists concerned too many of the regions water courses have no identity its human nature people are just more likely to care about a creek with a name they say they recognize the creek is there and they want to look after it said mark carroll a ballantrae man who works for a restoration group called the communiry resource centre of scarborough but naming tributaries of the rouge river and having those names made official is proving harder than mr carroll thought s the former whitchurch- stouffville councillor bent through grasses near main street stouffville last week to show a visitor the unnamed creek where he found a large turtle he wants to name the water course mishiikenh which means turtle in ojibway but the town rejected this suggestion along with ojibway names he has proposed for two other nameless creeks ive been turned down everywhere i went except for the aboriginal community said mr carroll who fears new residents wont recognize the creeks reshaped and channelized to accommodate development as watercourses unless they are named prospective names are sent to a provincial committee for approval markham which had not named a creek since the early 1970s decided a few years ago it would name several robinson creek milne creek morning- side creek on the rouge river and pomona creek on the don river in thornhill if you go forward with names it causes great grief mayor sue sherban on naming waterways all these names were in popular use even by the town but werent official said lily duoba manager of environ mental planning after talking to some resi dents and historians markham opted to change exhibition creek a name familiar to home owners as the floodprone stream behind their properties into mount joy creek markham will wait for the province to rule on the names which could take years before considering the timeconsum ing work of naming other creeks ms duoba said of the creeks in thornhill east don and german mills creek are on provincial maps said richard jarrell former chairperson of the markham conservation committee he praised the work a neighbour hood group called friends of little german mills creek has done along a tributary of german mills creek they adopt ed and named something thats nameless doesnt mean as much to peo ple mr jarrell said the rouge alliance the part nership governing rouge park has asked member municipali ties including markham whitchurchstouffville and richmond hill to find names for unnamed tributaries but in june the alliance sent back mr carrolls request to sup port his creek names saying it was his towns responsibility two years ago the town and alliance backed mr carroll when he proposed naming another rouge stream willow- grove creek because it ran through willowgrove day camp and a grove family has long lived in the area but mayor sue sherban said the town didnt have knowledge enough to support mr carrolls ojibway names whitchurch- stouffvilles staff is small and doesnt have anybody available to research names which could be challenged by a family or abo riginal group that feels slighted she said briefly officer hurt in pursuit the role of bylaw enforcement can be risky business just ask lome hurst last week while on patrol he spot ted a vehicle parked in a fire route at stouffvilles ap plaza while mr hurst was writing out a ticket the male driver appeared words were
