spartans won 3431 senior spartans hope to hoop it up this season sharon macfarlane noted that vol leyball is traditionally a popular sport among the senior girls at stouffville district secondary school basketball was more or less used as a tuneup for the volleyball season the spartans head coach said from her time coaching both sports at the school this year however macfarlane feels the spartans basketball team could pose some problems to oppos ing teams the spartans began their york region athletic association season last wednesday by winning 3431 over visiting brother andre catholic high school playing host to the twotime defending yraachampion father michael mcgivney catholic academy tuesday the spartans fell 5541 weve always been competitive in volleyball macfarlane said but this year i think were competitive in bas ketball bolstering the club this season has been the addition of several firstyear seniors in pearl coleshill a grade 11 guard who led the spartans offence against brother andre with 11 points erin button a sixfoot grade 12 centre who was a member of the central east regional provincial team added eight points in the loss to father michael mcgivney button and coleshill each had 14 points another added dimension to this years squad is its athleticism as multisport performers cassie sparks a grade 12 student and jesse harris a grade 11 student who both excel in track and liz knox a grade 11 student who plays hockey have made some timely contributions the girls have been working hard and so far its been a lot of fun to work with them macfarlane said girls have field day the stouffville district secondary school spartans girls field hockey team opened the york region athletic association season last week on a winning note playing two games at brother andre catholic high school in markham the spartans defeated dr gw williams secondary school aurora 31 and king city secondary school 30 alana lloyd scored twice for the defending yraa champion spartans in the win over dr gw williams jenna webber added the other goal in the win over king city webber alana lloyd and allison lloyd scored kaitlyn emerson posted the shutout spirit grounds thunderbirds before fightfilled ending vaughan vipers visit shortstaffed spirit this evening it was like a scene out of the movie step shot in thursdays provincial junior a hockey league con test at stouffville arena which saw the stouffville spirit blank the thornhill thunderbirds 30 six sepa rate fights erupted with just over two minutes remaining in regulation time the gloves began to drop just after the spirits mark boyce scored the final goal of the game on a powerplay with 206 left to play spirit forward rob groom and thunderbirds defence- man jesse zulauf opened the fight card which included a scuffle between spirit goalie dan mcwhinney and thunderbirds counterpart kyle howe just five seconds later zulauf was given an instigator penalty referee sean mcquigge had his work cut out for him in deciphering the instigators ken burrows spirit general manager felt incident last thursday was bad for the provincial league and culprits as he issued 133 total penalty minutes to the spirit and 159 against the thunderbirds spirit general manager ken burrows refused to lay fault with mcquigge but he did question thornhill head coach and general manager sean carneys actions maybe some of their thunderbirds players were a little frustrated but the coaches have to take respon sibility i dont think sean carney did a good job of that i dont know what he was trying to do maybe he was trying to send a message i thought it embarrassed the league a timeout was called by carney with 311 left to play the fights proved costly to the spirit as burrows noted he will lose three players for their next two games including simon gysbers mcwhinney and sean gray each of whom were handed game miscon ducts telephone calls left with the thunderbirds tuesday were not returned as of press deadline jake van allen and jordan mabley added the other spirit goals on powerplay efforts now 54 on the season the spirit outshot the thunderbirds who fell to 44 3622 the spirit resume
