residents by hannelore volpe staff writer speeding trucks on mccowan road the racket of slamming tailgates resounding through the neighbourhood and the possibility of question able fill materials going into a defunct gravel pit have prompt ed lemonville residents to turn to the town for help theyre worried about the safety of 11 children in the neighbourhood many of whom ride bicycles on the road several residents some of them seniors take daily walks and ride bicycles as well almost 40 residents at a neighbourhood watch meeting put their concerns in a petition delivered to mayor sue sherban last week under an agreement between whitchurch-stouf- fville and bloomington land company trucks bringing fill to the companys former gravel pit arent supposed to use mccowan road the road is too narrow and not built for heavy truck traffic resident marion wells said with speeds sometimes exceeding 100 kmh the safety of resi dents is at risk she added lemonville is a hamlet resident dave probert said and the vision years ago was cer tainly not to have this heavy heavy truck traffic residents have noticed a decrease in trucks since the neighbourhood watch meet ing there has also been increased police presence on mccowan and kennedy roads and warden avenue theyre worried about the safety of 1 1 children in the neighbourhood many of whom ride bicycles on the road the pit operator is required to control the routes of his trucks and is instructing truck ers to stay off mccowan said tom parry the towns director of development services they are supposed to use bloomington road and hwy 48 when coming to and from the pit in that area although rumours have been flying around the hamlet that mccowan road is to be widened in 2005 that is definite ly not the case said daniel kostopoulos project manager for york regions transportation and works department no new capital projects have been planned for mccowan south of bloomington under the regions 10year construction program dave chapman who bought bloomington land company from james sabiston is being proactive in working with the town to meet all requirements mayor sue sherban said a system of recording licence plate numbers of trucks coming into the pit has been instituted to make tracking loads easier and town staff are keeping a close eye on whats being brought onto the site we want to work with the owner to make sure all the appropriate checks and balances are put in place mrs sherban said photographs by residents which have been delivered to the mayor show materials such as insulation metal pipes con crete and wood were deposited at the pit those pictures con firm there are some materials that should not have been brought in mr parry said while company inspectors are responsible for checking loads and pulling disallowed materials the town is making five or six spot checks each week mr parry said to ensure the fill agreement is being upheld filling began at the pit in july mr chapman was not
