stouffville suntribune thursday aug 5 2004 7 subdivision fencing sad sign of times tall fences make good neighbours this expression seems to rule the roost as much in stouffville as elsewhere all one needs do is drive our subdivision streets barricades of various heights are everywhere between lots while swimming pool protection is a just and appropriate cause in most cases this is not the motive behind the move the purpose is privacy to keep out prying eyes and thats sad fifty years ago a fixation with privacy didnt exist or if it did it was only among the elite back then few could afford it and of those who could few thought it was need ed visitations both physical and visual were welcomed not so today people bottle themselves up like ants in a jam jar being a caste from the country fences of one sort or another were com mon in my life the purpose however was not to control intru sions of a human kind but invasions of a bovine kind one farmers cattle feeding on another farmers corn was not likely to prompt good relations so properties were separated roaming around with jim thomas but the thought of keeping out twolegged intruders was never intended truth is the opposite was practised with positive results neighbours socialized in a way that makes todays arrangements comparable to living in an armed camp its deplorable before we became so privacycon scious everyone was on a firstname basis residents were known by their horses not their cars neighbourhoods were meas ured in miles not kilometres and while fences were com mon in the country urban areas were for the most part porous one could roam residential back yards easier than walking roads heck not even the theft of a neighbours ripe watermelon posed much of a challenge it was a case of grab it and run nothing to crawl through or climb over life was simpler then today neighbours dont talk they telephone they dont give they loan they dont meet they retreat tall fences make good neighbours quite the opposite tall fences for us would remove neighbourliness a gift thafs still measured in a borrowed cup of sugar or a loaf of bread does anyone shovel your snow or cut your grass who borrows a cup of sugar or loaf of bread all this may seem a bit depressing but our story pro vides hope when we moved to stouffville 45 years ago we were the new kids on the block everyone around us was older or seemed older their kids for the most part had grown up and moved away two years later our youngest was still in diapers with five more potentials on the way our back yard was soon a play yard four decades later were the oldsters the couple behind us has two wee ones the couple east of us has one emptynesters live to the west and south we couldnt wish for finer neighbours while a fence separates twothirds of our lot it fails to cut off roving cats skunks or raccoons nor does it impair con versations regularly eric and sharon peter and jill and ray and lois stop what theyre doing and talk earl and wendy do the same diing when die grandchildren come to call adam with the help of his dad hops the fence and joins in should the need arise theres nothing they wouldnt do to help no need to say it we know it their friendship guar antees it we feel fortunate theres no need for material barriers when no personal barriers exist tall fences make good neighbours quite the opposite tall fences for us would remove neighbourliness a gift thats still measured in a borrowed cup of sugar or a loaf of bread jim thomas is a stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more than 50 years
