stouffville suntribune thursday march 112004 3 stouffville says by hannelore volpe what are you planning for march break how much free time should kids have asked at tot spot stouffville united church tuesday morning susan logan well go to the science centre and a childrens conceit and visit grandparents i am a big pro ponent of down time for creative free play tamara stokes hspfr rob em lalifesiteamkffl we hang out in our pjs and dont go any where we dont have to go to school we dont have to go to programs we love it jenlynn vogan sfl55kub bh blsip alb bh sb ipswtonsm 1 1 1 we arrange play and lunch dates we enjoy skating and swimming kids should go out side for at least one hour a day rhppbb nancy hsr i5 b miller r h well go to the library programs and a hockey tournament i have four children there will be a lot of unstructured time during the week highway star staff photosjoerd witteveen steven lummiss stands over hwy 404 where he saved the life of a girl dec 14 the whitchurch- stouffville resident who is a toronto firefighter was honoured for his actions at a ceremony tuesday firefighter honoured for saving girl while offduty by joan ransberry staff writer a stouffville resident cred ited with saving the life of a litde girl who was critically injured in a car accident has been honoured by toronto fire services steven lummiss 26 who lives on the ninth line was recognized tuesday at the annual rescue and merit awards ceremonies at the north york civic centre she was badly hurt she was unconscious the child was breathing a little but not much mr lummiss a firefighter with the toronto fire services was on his way home from work on hwy 404 dec 14 when he came upon a twovehicle accident just south of stouffville road after stopping and asking if he could- help he was directed to a woman who managed to get herself out of one of the wrecked vehicles her daughter however remained inside mr lummiss checked the childs vital signs she was badly hurt she was unconscious he said the child was breathing a little but not much recognizing such a severe breathing restriction was life- threatening mr lummiss used a bag valve mask to get air into the girls lungs i carry a mask in my car he said i worked on her for about 20 minutes her breathing improved the child was transferred by ambulance to the hospital for sick children where she remains toronto fire services captain david sheen said mr lummiss was recognized at the awards ceremony for going beyond the call of duty through his lifesaving actions anyone in the toronto fire services would have done what i did i just happened to be the first one there he also assisted in removing the child from the vehicle to get her to the hospital for sick children mr sheen said he per formed well mr lummiss doesnt consid er himself a hero anyone in the toronto fire services would have done what i did he said i just happened to be the first one there mr lummiss grew up in stouffville and attended local schools briefly ballantrae students send cancer kids to camp theyre only 300 strong but they raised enough money to give 46 chil dren with cancer summer vacations at camp trillium over the past two years the students of ballantrae public school raised more than 10000 this year and 13000 last year under the leadership of grade 5 teacher alison williams students in both grade 5 classes at ballantrae were involved in organiz ing the twohour trek for trillium around the school yard two weeks ago they made posters read announcements and visited class rooms to talk about the event all stu dents and staff at the school collected pledges before the trek mrs williams has volunteered at the camp for the past two summers and wanted a fundraiser where kids were helping kids she said skating free swimming on march break schedule not going to disney world for march break kids there are plenty of local activities next week for parents and children public skating each weekday from 1210 to 155 pm at the stouffville arena free public swims at the lebovic centre monday wednesday and friday from 1 to 230 pm hikes march 15 to 19 and chil drens activities march 20 and 21 dur ing the maple syrup festival at bruces mill conservation area stouffville road call 4166676299 daily performances and activities at the wwtchurchstouffville public library and workshops and activities at the latcham gallery and whitchurch- stouffville museum for more information see the community calendar on page 16 quoteworthy even the fathers in our group were in tears karen hord on skaters winning medals in france see story on page 18 contacting us have a news tip please phone us at 9056402612 email us at jmasonyrngcom visit us at 34 civic ave stouffville s3 a o
